WHAT ARE DETERMINERS?
Determiners are words that come before a noun and serve to modify the noun.
Determiners modify nouns by providing context and specificity to the noun.

Simply, a determiner is a word that introduces a noun. It always comes before

a noun, not after, and it also comes before any other adjectives used to
describe the noun.

Determiners are required before a singular noun but are optional when it

comes to introducing plural nouns.

DETERMINERS ARE OF FIVE TYPES:

1. ARTICLES

2. DEMONSTRATIVES

3. POSSESSIVES

4. QUANTIFIERS

5. INTERROGATIVES
1. ARTICLES: A,AN and THE. These are the most commonly used
Determiners. They determine the specificity of a noun.
Now articles can be either - DEFINITE i.e. THE, which tells us about a
particular noun, eg- the sun, the river which flows in Delhi.
OR
INDEFINITE i.e. A or AN, are used according to the sound of the
noun- eg - a bird, an egg.
since articles come before a noun and tell us whether the noun we
are talking about is specific or general.
Write two
examples of
word/sentences
with different
articles.
2.DEMONSTRATIVES
THIS,THAT,THESE,THOSE.
They point towards a noun and help in identifying by
avoiding its repetition.
Demonstratives show where an object, event, or person is in
relation to the speaker. They can refer to a physical or a
psychological closeness or distance. When talking about events,
the near demonstratives are often used to refer to the present while
the far demonstratives often refer to the past.

.
3. POSSESSIVES: When referring to a noun that belongs to
someone or something, you can use possessives to show ownership.
Possessives include my, your, his, her, its, our, and their.
For example:

● Where is your car?

● My best friend is a cat.
● Which one is his house?
● Honesty is her best quality.
● The tree shed its leaves.
● It's our secret recipe.
● They show ownership of a certain thing. Eg- my,ours, mine,
his,her,their,its.
Possessive Adjectives versus Possessive
Pronouns

A possessive adjective is an adjective that is used to

show ownership. It comes before a noun in the sentence
and lets us know to whom the noun belongs. While many
cases of ownership are shown with possessive nouns
(Karen's, children's), these possessive adjectives are
not nouns and are not formed by adding an apostrophe
+s.
The following words are possessive adjectives:
my your his her its our their--EXAMPLES:
● My computer is not working as fast as it worked in
the beginning.
● Our father told us not to quarrel with anyone.
● Your cycle has been stolen yesterday.

● Their favorite teacher did not come yesterday.

● Will you mind opening my drawer and look into it?
● I walked for 4 hours and now I cannot feel my legs.
Possessive Pronouns

Do not confuse these possessive adjectives with possessive

pronouns. A possessive pronoun does show ownership, but it

does not come before a noun or in a noun phrase. It stands alone. It

can also be used to replace a noun.
Here is a list of the possessive pronouns:
mine yours his hers its
● The toys are yours and mine.
● The house is theirs and its paint is flaking.
● The money was really theirs for the taking.
● We shall finally have what is rightfully ours.
● The dog is mine.
● The cat is yours.
