 Preface

Chandi di Vaar (Song of Chandi) is a poetic composition in Punjabi,

traditionally attributed to Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It is said to have been

composed at Anandpur Sahib. It is the fifth Baani of the Dasam Granth.

The poem is loosely based on the Durga Saptashati of the Markandeya

purana. In the song there is a vivid description of war, of the time of its

composition. It is composed of 54 stanzas (Pourhees) and 1 short verse

(Doharaa).

Almost every Pourhee describing the confrontation of the demons and the

Devi begins with the striking of drums. This aural aspect of war is used

as a repetitive motif throughout the song. There is also ample amount of

violent imagery to invoke the Beer (Vira/ Heroic) rasa. Guru Gobind

Singhji holds valour in high regard, of both the demons and the Devi,

and sees soldiers on both sides as heroes.

Nihang Singhs used to recite this daily. This was also read everyday

during wars and battles by Khalsaji. The first stanza of the Sikh Ardaas

is from the first stanza of this composition, containing the invocation of

the Supreme and the nine gurus.

The translation is almost entirely based on Pt. Giani Narain Singh’s Hindi

translation.

First of all I recall Bhagauti (The infinite Shakti Durga, the Sword)

and then meditate on Satguru Sri Guru Nanak.

I recall Guru Angad, Guru Amardas and Guru Ramdas, may they be

supportive.

I recall Guru Arjun Dev, Guru Harigobind and Guru Harirai.

I meditate on Guru Harikrishan, on seeing whom all sorrows

disappear.

After this I recall Guru Tegh Bahadur, recalling whom the house is

filled with the nine Nidhis (treasures)

The lord (Akaal Purakh) at first created the Khandaa (the double

edged blade), and then produced the universe.

Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva on being created, created the play of

nature.

Oceans, mountains and the earth were created, and the tent in the

form of the sky was extended without support.

Then the lord made the daityas and devatas in his realm, and created

conflict between the them.

You created Durga for the annihilation of the daityas.

Having derived strength from you, Ram slayed Ravana with his

arrows.

Having derived strength from you, Krishna grabbed the hair of Kamsa

and threw him to the ground.

Great sages and gods have undergone severe austerities of the body

for ages in order to gain your darshan and the limit of your expanse.

Nobody has found your ending. (2)

The age of truth i.e. Satyuga was over, and the age of sattva-rajas

guṇas i.e. Tretayuga had started.

Kalah i.e. tensions and suffering started dancing over everyone’s

heads intensified by the playing of his damaru drum

The Lord produced demons of great strength like Mahishasura and

Shumbha to bring down the ego of the gods.

These demons conquered and began to rule the three lokas (realms)

making the gods subservient to themselves.

Mahishasura was proclaimed to be the greatest hero and he became

the supreme king by unfurling a canopy over his head.

Indra was ousted from heaven, and they set their sights on Shiva’s

abode, Mt. Kailash.

Indra became fearful of the demons, and the terror in his heart for

them increased.

Indra came to Durga for protection. (3)

One day when Duragsaah came to bathe (in the river),

Indra came and recounted the pain of his condition to her.

Indra prayed – “O Mother! The demons have, with their strength,

seized our kingship,

And there is an outcry in the three realms because of them.

They sit in the Amaravati (The city of Indra), enjoying and playing

music with glee.

The demons have chased the gods away from every place.

None could conquer the demon Mahishasura.

We take refuge in you O Goddess, O Duragsaah!” (4)

Hearing Indra’s words Durga burst out laughing,

Then she was filled with rage, and she brought forth her demon-

eating lion.

“Do not worry at all”, she gave assurance to the gods.

Seething with rage the Great Mother prepared to kill the demons. (5)

On seeing Durga in the battlefield, the demons rushed in, desirous of

combat.

The shine of the swords and spears was so intense, that the sun

could not be seen. (6)

Heroes from both ends came forward to fight and the air resounded

with the sound of barrel drums, conchs and kettledrums.

The demons seething with rage came, adorned with swords and clad

in armour.

Both the sides engaged in combat, their feet oblivious to retreat.

The heroes roared in the battlefield. (7)

The battle commenced with the fervent sound of the kettledrums.

The flags bound to the lances were swaying and the khandaas of both

sides were shining.

Hearing the sound of the drums, the demons were prancing, like

drunkards with matted locks moving with the wind.

In the battlefield Durga and the demons faced each other to the

terrifying sound.

The heroes impaled by spears looked like olives stuck to branches.

Many of them injured by swords were thrashing about in agony like

drunkards rolling around.

The fainthearted among them, hiding in the bushes were being sifted

by Durgā, like gold out of sand by a goldsmith.

Maces, tridents, spears and arrows were moving around swiftly.

Heroes were dying from the blows of weapons, as if bitten by

venomous snakes.

In this way they were perishing from their injuries. (8)

On seeing irradiant Chandika arrive at the battlefield the kettledrums

began to be played.

The demons seething with rage, ran towards her from the four sides.

The demons with swords in their hands fought engaged in the

battlefield with great intensity.

The demons were such warriors, that they didn’t know of turning

their backs to the battleground.

Enraged within, the demons cried out – “Kill! Kill!”

The irradiant Chandika killed and laid them in heaps, like the harvest

of a farmer.

The heroes lay in the battlefield, falling headfirst like turrets felled by

lightning. (9)

The kettledrums were sounded and armies of both sides confronted

each other.

On seeing them, the Goddess wielded her iron sword, and let it

dance.

She struck the flared up demon Mahishasura’s stomach.

The strike was so powerful that the sword ate into his kidneys,

intestines and ribs.

I have stated the glory of the swordplay of Durgā as it appeared

within me.

The sword seemed like a comet with a trail (of blood, as it was

drawn out of the demon). (10)

On the sounding of the kettledrums, both sides engaged in combat.

The gods and demons drew out their swords from the scabbards.
Face to face, the heroes from both sides took turns in brandishing

their swords.

Streams of blood flowed like dye from saffron clothes.

The wives of the demons were watching the battle from tops of their

palaces.

The rides of Durga and the demons (lion and horses) were causing a

great uproar. (11)

A lakh of kettledrums were played by the adversaries facing each

other.

The demons were filled with rage, without any desire to retreat.

The heroes on both sides were roaring like lions.

The demons released arrows towards Durga, from taught bows. (12)

Kettledrums with twofold chains are being played.

The leaders of the demons, with matted hair, are covered in dust.

The nostrils of the demons are like mortars, and their mouths as big

as shelves.

Valorous demons with huge moustaches came to Durga to fight.

Having defeated the likes of Indra, these demons would not stop at

anything, nor could they be stopped.

Surrounding Durga, the demons are roaring like laden black clouds.

Kettledrums with stretched donkey skin membranes were struck as

the armies began to battle.

The valorous demons surrounded Durga.

The demons were experienced in war and didn’t know of fleeing.

The gods killed them in the end and sent them to heaven. (14)

Uncountable kettledrums were being played to fire the zeal of the

engaging combatants.

The gods and demons fought like male buffaloes.

The demons filled with rage were striking vehemently.

The swords drawn from the scabbards looked like saws.

In the middle of the battlefield demons as tall as towers engaged.

The Goddess was slaying those demons, tall as towers, and granting

them deliverance.

Demon who had never fled from battle came forward.

Durga picked up a heavy khadga (blade) and slayed all of them. (15)

As the war-kettledrums were sounded the heroes came forward to

fight with great enthusiasm.

The demon Mahishsura began to bellow in the battlefield like a storm

cloud.

(And said) “A warrior like Indra fled after being defeated by me,

Then who is this poor Durga, who has come to fight me in this

battlefield?” (16)

Drums and kettledrums rolled as the armies confronted each other.

Arrows from the sides facing each other whizzed, as if they were

their guides.

Countless heroes died from the onslaught of the arrows.

Heroes with huge bodies were lying in the battlefield, as if huge

towers had been struck by lightning.

Demons with their hair loose were bellowing (like male buffaloes) in

pain.

The dead lay in the battlefield like sadhus with matted hair,

intoxicated by bhaang. (17)

The armies faced each other to the sound of huge kettledrums.

The demon Mahishasura, filled with pride, came forward and

thundered like a cloud.

He took along with him thousands of brave warriors, towards the

battleground.

To fight the Goddess he drew a heavy khandaa from its scabbard and

held it in his hand.

The heroes came forward and a horrific bloodbath began.

The blood pouring from them seemed like the Ganga gushing from

the matted locks of Shiva. (18)

armies confronting each other.

With enthusiasm Durga drew her sword from the scabbard.

Chandi struck Mahishasura with the demon-devourer (her sword).

The blow crushed the skull of the demon, with the sword slicing his

mouth and sinking into his rib cage.

The sword went through the saddle, caparison and his horse, before

striking the earth.

Then it went through the earth and struck the horns of the bull (that

supports the earth).

Having killed the enemy (Mahishasura) it came to rest on the tortoise

(over whom the bull stands).

The demons lay across the battlefield like trees cut down for timber.

Streams of blood and marrow flowed in the battlefield.

The tale of Durga’s blow to the asura, and her courage shall be

remembered in the four ages.

Sending Lochan Dhoom towards the city of Yama,

of the demons.

They called upon their advisors (who recounted):

“They were the ones who had driven away Indra,

Such warriors were killed in an instant by the Devi.”

They rubbed their hands in grief.

Then according to their advice, Shumbha sent Sranhvat Beej

(Raktabeeja) to battle, giving him a folded paan.

He wore chainmail and a bright helmet.

The enraged demons started bellowing.

The ones who went to war, didn’t know of retreat.

They reached the battlefield to mount an assault, now see how they

It seemed like the goddesses were bathing in a river of blood.

The demons arisen from Sranhvat Beej’s blood were killed in the

battlefield.

The heroes started to fight to the sound of barrel drums, conch shells

and kettledrums.

The Devi remembered Kalka within, in a state increasing fury,

And she emerged from tearing apart her head, as if the sign of

victory had been sounded.

Kali came forward to battle growling, like Virabhadra who emerged

from the matted locks of Shiva.

Kali surrounded the demons in the battlefield, like a growling lion

circles its prey.

It seemed as if the Lord of the three worlds had become enraged.

The enraged Kali grabbed a Chakkar in one hand, and picked a

Khadga with the other, while going to fight.

Before her, the enraged demons sat ready, and they released a

downpour of arrows and swords.

She went inside the battle-formations of the demons, and killed them,

throwing them down.

Numerous demons were held by their locks and thrown down, as Kali

reached them roaring.

Great heroes were finished off one by one by Kali, by the shower of

numerous arrows.

The battlefield reverberated with Kali’s rage. (41)

On the striking of kettledrums, the sides confronted each other.

The warriors held their naked swords and made them dance in their

hands.

The swords driven into the bodies of the demons, ate into flesh like

vultures.

A torturous night had begun for them and their horses.

Joganis descended upon the battlefield to drink their blood.

The Devi drove away the army of the demons.

The ones who retreated gave the news to their king Shumbha.

“Not even a drop of blood of Sranhvat Beej went to the ground.”

Kali brought an end to all of Sranhvat Beej’s countenances.

The hour of death had been reached for numerous demons.

Warriors had fallen to the ground as if devoid of their mothers. (43)

Shumbha listened to the terrible news of Sranhvat Beej,

And heard that none could defend against the onslaught of Durga in

the battlefield.

Many valorous demons stood up enraged.

“Beat the kettledrums!” they ordered the drummers as they went to

war.

As the demons mounted the assault, the ground shook to their march.

Like a boat stuck in deep sea, the ground shook.

The dust from the hooves of their horses covered the sky.

It seemed as if the aggrieved earth was praying to Indra. (44)

The warriors received encouragement, and assembled their armies

with enthusiasm.

The demons marched towards Duragsaah, like Hajees on their way to

Kaabaa.

Arrows, swords and kataars were given away in the battlefield like

sweetmeats.

Many warriors were roving around injured, like a swinging Qazi while

teaching at a madarasa.
The warriors impaled by Devi’s spears were bent like those

performing Namaaz.

Many enraged warriors made their horses cavort and came to Durga

to fight.

Some demons ran up to Durga, like a hungry man to food.

Those warriors who couldn’t be satiated with war, were satiated. (45)

The warriors rained arrows in the battlefield.

The warriors with sharp swords were cutting the body parts of their

With great enthusiasm the armies came to the battlefield and

assembled in lines, ready to fight.

They pulled their swords from the scabbards with swishing sounds.

The demons filled with pride, crackled (like lightning) as the battle

intensified.

Heads, torsos and arms lay in the battlefield like heaps of flowers

plucked by a gardener.

The severed parts looked like sandalwood sawed off by a woodcutter.

When the kettledrums with donkey skin membrane were struck, the

sides confronted each other.

Durga aimed at the demons one by one and released arrows.

She destroyed the foot soldiers, and warriors astride elephants and

chariots.

The ends of arrows protruding from the armours seemed like

blossoms on a pomegranate tree.

Kalka became enraged and took a sword in her left hand.

From one end to another, many thousands like Hiranakas were killed.

The Devi alone was winning against the multitude of demons.

May your blows inflicted upon the enemy, attain beatitude forever.

Kettledrums with membrane of the skin of Yama’s buffalo were

struck, and the armies of the two sides started to war.

Nisumbh put chainmail over his horse and made it cavort.

Then he held a huge bow ordered on recommendation from Multan.

On seeing him get ready, Durga came to the battlefield in fury,

Duragsah mightily slashed through Nishumbha’s saddle,

With the sword cutting through horse and its armour, before hitting

the ground.

The brave Nishumbha fell from his saddle to the ground as if in

adoration before Shumbha.

Praise be to the valorous warrior!

May there be forever praise for your might!

Your chewing of folded paan (prowess in war) is to be praised.

Your drinking of wine is to be forever praised.

Your making the horse cavort is to be forever praised. (50)

The two sides faced each other to the sound of kettledrums.

The chiefs and warriors rose up in enthusiasm to fight.

They raised their swords, spears and weapons.

They wore metal helmets and chainmail, and bedecked their horses

with saddles and themselves with armour.

Duragsah took a spear and killed numerous demons.

Demons astride chariots and elephants and horses were thrown to the

ground.

They were impaled by her spear, like a confectioner puts a rod

On striking the huge kettledrum, the armies faced each other.

Duragsah took a radiant and sharp Bhagauti (sword) in her hand,

And struck the demon king Shumbha, and it drank his lovely blood.

From this blow Shumbha fell from his saddle, and it has been

contemplated as the simile –

The blood-drenched spear was withdrawn from his body,

And it seemed like a princess has descended in a red saree. (53)

Durga and the demons began fighting in the morning.

Duragsah weaponized all her arms.

Durga destroyed Sumbh and Nisumbh, the owners of immense wealth.

On seeing the two dead, the armies of the demons began to weep

immensely.

Taking grass in their mouths they abandoned their horses in retreat.

She killed the ones fleeing with such force, that they dared not to

Over king Indra’s head the canopy was unfurled.

The glory of the mother of the world spread over the fourteen realms.

This reading on Durga is composed of all the Pauris.
