Worksheet Objectives:
1. Describe the political frame
2. Apply the political frame to your personal case situation

Complete the following making sure to support your ideas and cite from the textbook and other
course materials per APA guidelines. After the peer review, you have a chance to update this and
format for your Electronic Portfolio due in Module 6.

1) Briefly restate your situation from Module 1 and your role.

My role is an external consultant. They are looking to improve the Diversity, Inclusion,

Equity & Belonging department. The company is looking for innovative ideas that

would lead them to the future.

Paypal believes that “Embracing the diverse backgrounds, abilities, and perspectives

that make up PayPal makes us better.” The company has achieved 100% in pay equality

in the U.S. and would like to explore other opportunities to continue to champion

inclusion. They are currently supporting Veteran Jobs Mission, AfroTech, Lesbians Who

Tech Summit, and Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement. Paypal is looking for other

opportunities to partner with the community.

2) Describe how the politics of the organization influenced the situation.

“Political dynamics can be sordid and destructive. But politics can also be a vehicle for

achieving noble purposes (Bolman & Deal, 2021).” Political Dynamics within the

organization such as power struggles, conflicting agendas, and resistance to change will

impact the effectiveness of the DEI department. It is vital that an organization support the

political environment and strong leadership commitment to DEI in order to improve the

success of their DEI initatives.

The politics of an organization can have a significant impact on the success or failure of a

Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity & Belonging (DEI) department. If the organization’s

leadership prioritizes DEI efforts and provides the necessary resources and support, the

DEI department will likely be more effective in creating a more diverse, inclusive, and

equitiable workplace. On the other hand, if the leadership does not fully support the DEI

efforst or is more focused on other initatives, then the DEI department may struggle to

make progress and achieve its goals.

3) Recommend how you would use organizational politics for an alternative course of
action regarding your case.

A successful DEI initiative will likely require a combination of these strategies and a

clear understanding of the political landscape in order to navigate any challenges and

advance of the DEI initiatives.

My recommendations would be to assesing the political climate can provide insight to the

beliefs of the stakeholders and challenges for DEI initatives. Encouraging managers

within the organization to set an agenda to outline the goals and activities. Having

management communicate strategies effectively and build build support to overcome

political opposition.

4) Reflect on what you would do or not do differently given what you have learned
about this frame.

Building relationships, coalitions, and networking are important to the success of a power

base. Allies help mangers, so I would focus on building relationships. In chapter 10, the

authors refer to Kotter’s four steps for exercising political influence. 1) Identify important

relationships and key players you will need to influence. 2) Determine the leadership

challenges and why and how strong. 3) Connect with potential opposition to encourage

communication, education and/or negotiations. 4) Transition to more forceful methods

(Bolman & Deal, 2021).
