Title: Mark, release and recapture technique (AI)

Aim: To determine if sample size affects the accuracy of the estimation of population size of peas using the
mark, release and recapture technique.

Apparatus/Materials: Split peas, Correction fluid, Beakers.

Method

1. Fill a beaker with 500 split peas.

2. Collect a first sample of 100 peas and mark them using correction fluid and allow it to dry.
3. When the peas are completely dry, return them to the beaker and carefully shake the beaker so that
the marked peas are randomly mixed with the rest of the population.
4. Take a second sample of 50 peas (small sample size) and count the number of marked peas.
5. Estimate the population size of the peas.
6. Return all the peas to the beaker.
7. Record your observations in a suitable table.
8. Repeat steps 2 to 6 two more times and calculate the average estimated
9. Repeat steps 1 to 8 but use 150 (medium sample size) and 250 (large sample size) as your second
sample size to estimate population number using the mark, release and recapture technique.
10. Calculate the average estimated population size of the population of peas using small, medium and
large sample sizes respectively. Diagram:

1 100 50 22 227
2 100 50 10 500
3 100 50 17 294
4 100 100 20 500
5 100 100 23 435
6 100 100 25 400
7 100 150 25 600
8 100 150 27 556
9 100 150 29 517

Results:

• Calculation of estimated population number for each sample size.

• Calculation of average estimated population size for each sample size.

Discussion:

1. What is the mark, release and recapture technique used for?

2. Which sample size (small, medium or large) is more accurate for estimating population number using
the mark release and recapture technique? Why?
3. What are some assumptions of the mark, release and recapture technique? Source of
errors/Limitations/Precautions/Suggestions for better results

Conclusion: Which sample size (small, medium or large) is more accurate for estimating population number
using the mark release and recapture technique?
