ME 515: Mechatronics
Tutorial 02

1. An eight bit weighted resistor digital to analog converter has the following specs: reference
voltage VR = 10V, most significant bit resistance R = 12kΩ and feedback resistance of the
operational amplifier RF = 6 kΩ. Calculate:
a. the output voltage corresponding to the least significant bit
b. the output voltage corresponding to the most significant bit
c. the maximum value of the output voltage Vo
d. the nominal full scale of output voltage Vo
e. the resolution
f. the output corresponding to the binary number 10011011.

2. An analog to digital converter with n = 8 bits, has the following specs (based on the standard
notations): R = 1 kΩ, RF = 2 kΩ, and VR = 10V. Calculate the full scale range, nominal scale range
and the resolution.

3. A data acquisition system uses a DAC with a range of - 10 V to + 15 V and a resolution of 0.005 V.
Determine the number of bits the DAC must have.

4. The output voltage of an aeroplane altimeter is to be sampled using an ADC. The sensor outputs
0 V at 0 m altitude and outputs 10 V at 50 km altitude. The altimeter datasheet shows that the
allowable error in sensing (½LSB) is 5 m. Determine the minimum number of bits required for the
ADC.

5. A 4-bit ADC utilizes the successive-approximation method for converting an input signal of 2 V
and an input range of - 5 V to +5 V. Determine the digital output.
