Nationwide state building codes (based on the IBC-International Building Code, and the IFC-International Fire Code) require
that floor identification signs are installed in specific high-rise building emergency staircases [paragraph 1023.9 Sub 6 in 2015
and 2018 editions of the IBC].
NFPA 101-Life Safety Code also requires stairway identification signs [paragraph 7.2.2.5.4 in the 2015 edition]. In most
jurisdictions, the floor level [B for basement, PH for penthouse, level numbers such as 1, 2, 10, etc.] shall be in raised
character and shown in tactile braille underneath. In certain jurisdictions, the entire sign text shall be raised and in tactile
braille.
