The document discusses the written language of Ancient Egypt known as hieroglyphs. Hieroglyphs were complex pictures and symbols used in inscriptions on stone monuments from 3000 BCE to 300 CE. There were two main types: phonograms represented sounds or syllables through images like a bird for the sound "A"; and logograms represented whole words through images, such as a man meaning the word for man. Hieroglyphs retained a close connection to Egyptian art of the time.

The world and the culture of Ancient Egypt still has the power to enthrall and fascinate

people of all ages today. Mystery and intrigue are everywhere to be found in the rituals

and customs of this advanced ancient society, but perhaps the most gripping mystery is

their written language of pictures and symbols known as hieroglyphs.

The form of these hieroglyphs of the Archaic period corresponds exactly to the art style

of this age. In historical times, around 3000 BCE–300 CE, hieroglyphic writing was used

for inscribing stone monuments. In that hieroglyphic signs represented pictures of living

beings or inanimate objects, they retained a close connection to the fine arts. The same

models formed the basis of both writing and art.

Phonograms pertains to a symbol representing a vocal sound. Similar lang sa alphabet

na ginagamit natin, the symbols of the English alphabet denote a sound, yung A B C D,

ganon din dito sa hieroglyphs, except, dito, it is in the form of more complex figures and

shapes gaya ng bird for denoting A, an arm or a foot for denoting B, and so on. So,

basically, these figures stand for a sound of syllables.

Next is the Logograms. Logograms defines the object of which it is an image. Dito

naman, hindi lang syllables yung nirerepresent nung figures, it denotes a word as a

whole. For example, a figure of a man literally means a man or a person, a drawing of a

plant literally refers to a plant or a flower, a drawing of a water literally refers to a water

or anything that is liquid or an action that has something to do with water, and so on.

Again, logograms represent the image of a thing or action.
