I'll admit I'm not really a big tech guy, but I like to remain curious about things because it keeps the bad
thoughts at bay. The thing I'm currently curious about it is memory allocation and memory management, in
particular with regards to fitting a lot of "stuff" (or "content") into a small file size. I'm fascinated with how
old boomer / gen x devs were able to make games such as the original Final Fantasy on the NES or
Pokemon Red & Blue on the Game Boy that had these big hub worlds with a load of towns and items and
monsters and customizable teams and so on all the while keeping these games to sizes of 1MB or less. I
did some research into this and found that they were basically using every memory saving trick in the
book and were able to code in clever ways to "fit" as much stuff as possible into such a small space.
Anyway, since I'm interested in this specific area of computing and no other (I'm not looking for a
programmer job or anything), how retarded or not retarded would it be for me to endeavor to learn
assembly via NASM on a Linux OS so I can get an intuitive sense of how to make programs with as small
a file size as possible? Is there a better way of going about it? So far all I've managed to learn is how to
convert any number into binary by hand and how to look at any byte and mentally convert it to
hexadecimal and vice versa (though I also haven't installed Linux yet, last time I used a Linux OS was
with an almost completely broken desktop running Ubuntu eight years ago).

You can try running Driver Manager on Mint, if you haven't. Otherwise, you're going to need more info
than that. You'll have to look up the exact model, or the usb vendor and product id and figure out what
chipset it uses. You can read dmesg after you plug it in to see if it gets recognized in any way.

Got a cheap secondhand laptop I'm working on refurbishing.

It mostly runs fine, but there's an issue where the system completely hangs about a
minute after waking from sleep/hibernation. Doesn't respond to any keyboard/mouse
input or single-pressing the power button. I have to hold down the power button to
turn it off.
I don't *think* it's an issue in the OS or system settings since it happens under multiple
OSes.

The SSD inside has Manjaro installed, but I also sometimes boot Ubuntu or Windows
from USB drives, and the issue occurs there as well.

So I was thinking hardware issue. Tested the RAM with MemTest86+ and it checked
out.

Since the issue occurs when booted to USB drives I assume the issue isn't with the internal SSD either.

Any suggestions regarding what to try next?

I don't know why you'd need Win 11 but also don't need a computer with a decent processor, but I digress.
The former has a better processor and you can install Windows 11 on it. The latter comes with Win 11 but
a worse processor.
Why do you need Windows 11 anon? As someone who uses it, it sucks, even compared to Windows 10.

Are coding boot camps scams?
Contacted my old uni to see what their offerings in CS were like, but didn't think I'd get a call from the
coding bootcamp people (I just expected a pamphlet PDF or something), and they want $7000+ (USD) for
a 6-month course where all you do is SQL, machine learning, and a project of your own. I just said it's
better off doing a degree at that cost and she said "well, it's for people who want to quickly get into the
tech industry if they already have a job..."
Yes, I already have a job, but why would I want to pay that much for shit I can probably learn on my own?
They say they do partnerships with tech people so you probably do get exposure if you're exceptional, but
it seemed weird I have to pay to play.

Recently got an UPS for my PC, not that demanding so the thing isn't that big you know, it's
1200VA/720W but I then realized my environment might not be ideal for it, usually 70 to 100 F/20 to 35 C
in ambient temperature and kinda dusty.

Use it? Use a surge protector instead, H2S risk is my main concern.
