• 2.1 - ROTOR SHAFf

The rotor is the main rotating inducting component of the generator. It is cut from a single

forging, also including the turbine coupling flange.

Prior to machining, the forging is thoroughly checked, e.g. by ultrasonic inspection, so as

to make sure that it is not defective and has the required mechanical strength, since at rated speed

the heavy stresses due to the centrifugal fon-e require high strength materials and accurate

machining.

The winding slots are milled in the rotor shaft and contain the rotor winding coils, held in

place by non magnetic metal keys, accurately machined and driven into their dovetailed splines .

The pole slots too are milled: they improve the rotor cooling system and facilitate fitting of

the retaining rings by means of tangential keys .

• 8
'
• 2.2 • RETAINING RINGS

Function of the retaining rings is to maintain the correct initial position of the rotor end

windings thus preventing them from deflecting d1lc to the centrifugal force high value during

operation.

The retaining rings are implemented with non-magnetic steel: their design and final

machining have been carefully attended so as to optimize their dimension since they-are indeed

the generator components most subjected to mechanical stresses.

The assembly is carried out by shrinking on the outside surface of the two rotor ends. During

heating, the temperature value is strictly monitored so as to prevent reduction of mechanical

properties of the materials due to too high heatings .

• 9
• 2.3 - ROTOR WINDING

Function of the rotor winding is to induce the magnetic field originating the machine voltage

(e.m.f.) by rotating inside the stator winding (armature).

The rotor winding is implemented with round edged copper strands sheared and welded in

a rectangular shape.

The insulation between the strands of a coil is made of overlopped stripes of insulation,

sticked to the copper and hot pressed to obtain a single set.

The rotor coils are locked up by svitable keys along the rotor body. Insulation spacers blocks

and strong retaining rings (locked and centered on the rotor body) with insulation layer maintain

the end-windings .

• 10
• 4.1- VENTILATION

TI1e machine is coo led indirectly by means of stator winding and directly by means of rotor

winding, with closed circuit air circulation.

The ventilation system provides efficient removal of heat due to losses by the moving parts

of the rotor and the stator, thereby avoiding high temperatures or uneven heating and related

stresses.

A flows of cooling air is created by two axial ventilators located at the ends of the rotor.

The ventilators are constructed of light alloy wing shaped revolving blades which are

attached to the ventilation rings by means of bolts.

The ventilation air, set in motion by the ventilators, is divided into several currents: one

current flows directly to the air gap between the rotor winding heads and the retaining rings;

another strikes the stator heads, the end parts, and successively, by means of specially placed

conduits in the stator frame, cools the central zones, flowing through the ventilation canals until

reaching the air gap; the remaining ventilation air enters below the retaining rings, laps below the

rotor winding heads, enters the slots on the sides of the conductions on the faces of the heads, flows

longitudinally along the conductors and out of the air gap through radial canals in the conductor

winding, in the insulating interlay and the metal lo<;king splines.

Part of the air that enters the conductors is directed toward the heads, thereby cooling the

heads direct! y.

The reunited air currents cool the exterior of the rotor and flow through the ventilation canals

of the stator.

The air flows over the refrigerant elements, releases heat to the water running through the

• tube nest and, cooled to the specified temperature, returns to the ventilators by means of conduits

and guides.
16
• All of the elements of the ventilation circuit have been designed to guarantee proper

distribution of the air load in the various parts of the machine and a regular flow with the least

possible loss .

• 17
• 4.2 ·DEHUMIDIFICATION SYSTEM

A closed circuit, chemical, absorbent dehumidification system is provided tci protect the

machine from humidity during shut down.

With this system (MUNTERS type) the drying process is continuous and the

temperature and humidity level of the treated air remains constant.

The absorbent, or rather, the absorbent rotor in this type of dehumidifier is composed

of two asbestos strips, one smooth and the other rippled, thereby forming an extremely large

number of passages through which the air must pass. The rotor is impregnated with a hygroscopic

material that serves as the active absorbent substance. The rotor rotates slowly within the

apparatus. Two different air currents flow across it: one is the air current to be dried, while the other

is the regenerated air current.

In this manner a continuous dehumidification process is attained.
