Directions: Analyze the image given and answer the questions that follow. Write
your answer in a separate sheet of paper.

Questions:
1. What is the issue being depicted in the image above?
2. How do you relate this concern in conducting research?

What’s New
When writing a research paper, literature citation is important for two reasons:
(1) to avoid plagiarism which is against the student code of conduct or ethical/moral
standards for that matter and (2) to assign the proper authority to a statement. Giving
credit to the source of any information of ideas needs to be done in the text is known
as citing literature.

There are so many ways of citing sources but the most common of these styles
are the American Psychological Association (APA, Modern Language Association (MLA),
Chicago Manual of Style and many more. According to the online writing lab, Purdue
Owl, the MLA is more commonly used when writing research topics in the liberal arts
and humanities scope of study while the Chicago Manual of Style citation, published
in 1906 by the University of Chicago Pres, is not widely used and respected style
guides in the United Sates ( Spencer,2011). The APA format is the most commonly
used style of citing sources within the social sciences (Angelie et al., 2010).

Each citation style, APA, MLA, Chicago Manual Style, Harvard Style or Vancouver
has format to follow. Some of these formats were discussed during your Practical
Research 1 and Practical Research 2.

Below are the examples of citing sources using in-text citation and bibliography
or references.

In-text citation is citing sources within a sentence or paragraph. Below are few
examples of in-text citation in a literature review using the different styles.

Citation Style In-text Citation Examples

References on the other hand is another citing sources that list the sources you
refer to in your writing. This goes side by side with your in-text citation because all the
sources you mentioned in your study should be listed in your references. It is usually
found at the back or at the end of your writing. Here are few examples using the
different styles.

Laying-out your Reference Section

At the end of your report, before the appendix is where you put the reference
section. It is an alphabetical list of all the references you cited in the text of your
report. It allows readers to find out more information about the references used and to
go out to them if the readers want to. References in the text must match perfectly
those found in the reference section. When writing in APA style, you always include a
reference section, not a bibliography (Dampster and Hanna, 2016).
You should always cite other people’s words, ideas and other intellectual
property that you use in your research or that have an influence on your ideas. This
includes what had been presented as different types of materials. The demand is that
you should cite whenever you use a direct quote, paraphrase, summarize, use facts or
statistics that are relatively less known or relate directly to your argument.

What’s More
Directions: Rewrite the following items by making corrections to the underlined
APA citations. Follow the APA standard format. Write your answers in a
separate sheet of paper.

1. Internet users have various ways of presenting themselves online, this is called
as the “cyber self” (2010, Avila, page 6).

2. In the case of facebook users, (Reyes & Macheca, 2013) say they enact a type
of facebook “presenting self” through the profile system of the social networking
site.

3. When people write and develop their profile, they choose their profile picture,
and publicly write on other user’s Facebook walls. They are all consciously and
unconsciously developing that Facebook “presenting self” (2011, Eroy).

8
4. Lamela and Tolentino study disclosed that “status” in Facebook acted as
advanced buddy information which can be used to manage students’ online
identities (2007).

5. According to the said research, 92% of the Americans surveyed were into
Facebook 2012 PRC.

What I Have Learned

The literature review format can vary by discipline, according to the purpose of
the review or to the format or style adopted by the publisher. In-text citation is citing
sources within a sentence or paragraph. References on the other hand is another
citing sources that lists the sources you refer to in your writing. This goes side by side
with your in-text citation because all the sources you mentioned in your study should
be listed in your references. It is usually found at the back or at the end of your
writing.
