PROCEDURE
I. Introduction (5 minutes)
The previous lesson was about the different methods (relative & absolute dating)
to determine the age of stratified rocks. For the teacher to know how far the students
have understood the topic, some pictures will be shown for them to refresh their
knowledge on the previous topic.
Review Questions:
a. What insights about relative & absolute dating are portrayed on the following
pictures?
b. Identify which of the following pictures are an example of relative/absolute
dating?
Pile Me Up
(Materials: Pancakes with different colors from darkest to lightest)
a. The teacher will prepare pancakes of different colors
b. The pancakes will be piled up from darkest to lightest shade.
c. The teacher will draw opinions from the students about the piled
pancakes by utilizing the ff. questions:
i. What are your general observations from the piled pancakes? How
were they arranged?
ii. In what way could this activity be related to determining the age of the
soil?
Buzz Group: The class will be grouped in fives .They will come up with a
generalization on the age of the soil based on the demonstration done by the
teacher.
Trivia Question: Why can’t we find dinosaur fossils in the Philippines?
Video Analysis: The teacher will play a video about geologic timescale then the
class will analyze information depicted on the video
Guide Questions:
1. What are the different Periods of the Geologic Timescale?
2. What are the different organisms present in each Period? Describe each one.
3. How does each period differ from one another?
Worksheet: KNOW MY AGE!
Each student will have one color of crayon representing the subdivision of
geologic time. They will shade the subdivision following the correct chronological order of
the geologic time.
Processing: The teacher will highlight the most acceptable ideas to determine
the sequence of geologic timescale through absolute & relative dating.
IV. Practice (10 minutes)
The students in the same group will create a model of geologic timescale using
the different materials to be given by the teacher.
V. Enrichment (45 minutes)
Argument in Action (Informal Debate): Each group will be divided into two sides
(Relative dating & Absolute Dating). They will be debating on the topic: Which is
most acceptable in determining the Geologic timescale?
There will be 4 matches (Group 1 vs Group 3; Group 2 vs. Group 4; Group 5 vs.
Group 8; Group 6 vs. Group 7)
Concept map
Each group will create their own concept map about how relative and absolute
dating be used in determining the geologic timescale.
