ACTIVITIES FOR TEACHERS TO TEACH AND LEARNERS TO TRAIN THEMSELVES FOR CEFR SPEAKING

PAPER

PT3

 The aim of CEFR speaking paper for lower secondary is to encourage learners to be creative and
imaginative. Learn how to use descriptive language and be confident in expressing their
stories.
 It focuses on topics relating with the learners itself

Part 2 * Picture Guided

For Teachers
An activity that can help learners is ‘Storytelling’
Steps
 Teachers can share a series of pictures on the board and encourage learners to generate a story
based on the picture series.
 Learners can use the picture series as a guideline to plan their story .
 Then learners can share their stories orally either in pair or in front of their class.

For Learners training themselves : read a lot of novels/narrative essays to get ideas on creating
stories/read a lot of sample picture writing essays

Part 3* POINTS GIVEN

An activity that can help learners is ‘Knowing Yourself/ Self Survival’

For Teachers

Steps
 Teachers can conduct an activity where teacher introduces a topic like
camping/sports/hobbies/movies anything that enable learners to know themselves better or
teaching self survival
 Teacher use bubble map and writes the topic in the middle and eight to five bubbles with points.
 Individual
 Learners individually will choose what point they want and then think how to explain their point.
Teachers can provide the language input.
 Pair
 Then learners share and argue their points and choose one best point.
 As learners talk teachers provide the language input.

SPM

 The aim of CEFR speaking paper for upper secondary is to encourage learners to be connected
with their family , friends and community
 Learn how to use descriptive language and be confident in expressing their personal
experiences as well as their opinions about others
 Learn to do reviews
 Learn to make a choice and justify their choice
 It focuses on topics relating with the learners personal experiences with their family and
friends as well as their thoughts about others.

Part 2 Individual Long –Turn

An activity that can help learners is ‘Presenting A Spoken Review’

For Teachers
This activity is interesting because learners will review an event or function or holiday trip or a
community activity or a cultural celebration they participated or person they admire and present their
review to the class.

Review must include :


 What you participated?
 What you did?
 Do you like or dislike and Why?
 Why do you think it is important to others?

Steps

 Teachers introduce a topic like a school event and write Wh questions on the board relating to
the school event.
 Then ask learners to brain storm their review and plan their review based on the Wh questions
given.
 Lastly learners will present their review to others.

For Learners training themselves : read a lot of review writings to get ideas on how to review social
activities or personal experiences engaging in social activities
Part 3 Discussion (Pairs)

Activities that can help learners are ‘Make A Choice and Discuss’ and ‘Open Mind’
* Topics mostly current issues or factual
For Teachers: ‘Make A Choice and Discuss’
Steps
 Teachers provide a Wh question and state the possible answers for the question on the board.
 Individual part
 Learners will decide one possible answer that they feel is correct and will prepare their reasons
why?
 Discussion Session
 Teachers divide learners according to their choice of answers and ask them to discuss and
choose the best correct possible answer.
 As learners are discussing in English teachers provide the needed language input.

For Extension question : an activity that can help learners is ‘Open Mind’.
For Teachers:
Steps: Teachers bring up a broder issue relating to the Wh question given above
and learners share what they think about the given issue? Not discussion but Sharing Session

For Learners training themselves : read a lot of articles regarding current issues / read a lot factual
articles.
MUET

 The aim of CEFR speaking paper for MUET is to encourage learners to be aware of the issues
happening around their society
 Learn how to use argumentative language and be confident in expressing their personal
opinions regarding social issues.
 Learn to do presentation
 Learn to debate and prove their answers are the most relevant.

Part 1 Individual Presentation

An activity that can help learners is ‘Presenting Speech’


Topics : Social Issues
For Teachers
Steps
Teachers need to give current issues or topics that are closely connected with our society and assign
learners to plan their speech and present. As learners plan teachers can provide language support.

For Learners training themselves : read a lot on speech / talks essays as well as watch how people
present their speech in public.

Part 2 Group discussion

An activity that can help learners is ‘Debating Your Way Out’

For Teachers
Steps
 Teacher use bubble map and writes the topic in the middle and eight to five bubbles with points.
 Individual
 Learners individually will choose what point they want and then think how to explain their point.
Teachers can provide the language input.
Debating time
Once ready learners will started debating their points by agreeing as well as opposing the other and
trying hard to prove their point is the best.
Teacher provides argumentative language input.
For Learners training themselves : read a lot on argumentative essays/watch a lot of debating talking
shows.
