SAQ 1: Discuss briefly how basketball was invented.

During the year 1891, month of December, it was the season of winter and the
Superintendent of Physical Education of the newly opened YMCA tasked Mr. James
Naismith to create an indoor game that will keep the young men in training active
despite the winter season. Through that the game basketball was made with the help
of his wife and the game ‘Duck on a Rock’. After making the mechanics of the game
he made the 13 rules of basketball. Then, he introduced the new game to his 18
trainees, made them as equal two teams, and made them play basketball for the first
time in history.

Create a list of famous basketball players in the Philippines. Write their contributions

1. June Mar Fajardo – He is also known as “The Kraken”. He became part of the

2. Robert Jaworski – He is one of the named PBA’s 40 Greatest Players. He played


23 seasons in PBA during his time as a professional basketball player. He is one
of the reasons why the sport basketball became widely played in the Philippines.

3. Ramon Fernandez – He is known as one of the greatest players that have played
in the PBA. Fernandez played during the 1974 FIBA World Championship and
Asian Games, 1990 Asian Games. He is known to be the PBA’s all-time leader in
rebounds, blocked shots, free throws made, playing minutes, and second-all-time
in assists, games played, and steals.

4. Bogs Adornado – Known to be one of the best Filipino basketball players of all
time. He made his PBA debut in 1970 in a team which is one of the pioneers of
the PBA. Moreover, he played during the Men’s Olympic basketball team in the
1972 Munich Games and was the youngest member.

5. Alvin Patrimonio – He is a former professional basketball player and was a part


of the Philippine national team. His notable PBA records are most consecutive
games played, third-most points scored in history, fourth-most rebounds grabbed
in history, and second-most PBA MVP awards.

6. Benjie Paras – He is a former professional basketball player. He is known to have


an uncanny ability for ball-handling, powerful rebounding, well-timed shot blocks,
and inside scoring. Furthermore, he became the only PBA player to win both
Rookie of the Year and the most MVP award in a single season during the year
1989.

7. James Yap – His most known notable achievement is the historic grand slam in
2014. Yap and his teammates won the 2013-2014 Commissioners’ Cup and the
2013-2014 Governors’ Cup Finals MVP award.

8. Ricardo Brown – He is known to be the first Filipino-American to play as a local


in the league. Brown is known to be one of the PBA’s finest players and
sportspeople to play in the Philippines’ hardcourts.

9. Johnny Abarrientos – He is known as “The Flying A” for his powerful playing


style. He is marked to be the shortest player to win the PBA MVP award.

10. Allan Caidic – He formerly played in the Philippine national team. His notable
achievements and records are most points scored in a single game and the most
three-point field goals made in a single game. Moreover, he also holds the record
for the most consecutive free throws made and the most three-point field goals in
a career. He is named to be one of the best three-point shooters in Asia during
his playing career.

SQA 2: List down below the safety/ etiquette and care of equipment/ facilities. Explain
why is it important.

SAFETY/ETIQUETTE IN PLAYING BASKETBALL

1. Clear the gymnasium and immediate playing area of movable obstructions and
cover or pad those obstructions that cannot be moved.
2. No rough play or horseplay will be tolerated.
3. Be careful/aware of the walls during practice or play.
4. When possible make use of breakaway rims and pad the underside of the
backboards.
5. No loose or hanging jewelry should be worn by competitors. Remove rings,
bracelets and wristwatches.
6. Only gym shoes with sufficient traction should be worn.
7. Always be alert of play, even if you are standing on the sidelines.
8. Whenever possible during the drills or game play, participants of common ability
levels should play against each other.
9. Good sportsmanship should be displayed by all.
10. Take periodic rest and water breaks.

IMPORTANCE: It helps players to be mindful of their actions before, during, and


after the play/game. Also, it helps the players to be responsible players that gives
each other respect and have care for their body in able to prevent having injuries
as possible that they can. These rules/guidelines notify players what they should
and should not do/ wear inside the court for a healthy game.

CARE OF EQUIPMENT/FACILITIES

1. Balls are stored in portable bins and should be carefully returned to the bins at
the end of each period of use. Do not kick the basketballs or throw them from
a distance into the storage bins.
2. Balls should be checked often for proper inflation levels.
3. Do not sit on or throw the basketballs against the gym walls.
4. Do not hang on the rims or nets.
5. The playing floor should be swept and cleaned regularly.

IMPORTANCE: This guideline serves as a reminder on how players and other


staffs in the basketball association can maintain their facilities and equipment.
Guidelines like this keeps the people who uses the equipment and facilities
reminded to take good care of those before, during, and after the game. Practicing
this guideline will help everyone to have their equipment and facilities used for a
long period of time because of good and mindful maintenance.
