Abstract
A survey of the activities and physical spaces with respect to workshops and laboratories in the Vehicle
Engineering Program at KTH was undertaken. The investigation is part of the CDIO program that is a
major research and development effort in engineering education at KTH in collaboration with MIT
(Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Chalmers University of Technology and Linköping’s
University.
The survey was carried out through personal interviews with faculty responsible for individual subjects
and for in-depth profiles, or with equivalent staff at departments that are essential for the Vehicle
Engineering Program.
The results of the survey include the total number of students at each department that are involved in the
eight different workshop and laboratory activities described in this investigation, i.e. activities outside
traditional classroom teaching including lectures and tutorials (Swe: räkneövningar).
The results of the survey show that there is a strong relation between the type of subject and the use of
workshops and laboratories. In mathematics and numerical analysis, and computing science, there are
only a few students involved in activities which take place in particular workshop or laboratory spaces;
even then, these students are in a “Student Work Place Mode”. On the other hand, in more applied
subjects like machine design, vehicle engineering, and aeronautics, a large number of students are
involved in more or less all of the eight different workshop and laboratory activities considered in this
investigation. Traditional engineering science subjects like mechanics and solid mechanics typically end
up somewhere between these two extremes.
The workshop and laboratory activities are dominated by four activities reflecting quite traditional use
of workshop and laboratory space. These four are “Class Lab Mode”, “Laboratory Work Mode”,
“Student Work Place Mode” and “Teaching in Labs Mode”. “Design Product” is used at the
departments of Machine Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Aeronautics. The “Tinkering mode” is used
at the departments of Machine Design and Aeronautics. Only at the department of Aeronautics are
students involved in activities of the type “Large System Mode”. The survey also shows that only about
20% of the students at the Vehicle Engineering Program carry out their diploma thesis work in spaces
belonging to a department at KTH. This reflects the fact that the overwhelming majority of students
carry out their diploma thesis work in industry.
The survey also presents the equipment available at the different workshop and laboratory spaces
available to the Vehicle Engineering students, as well as the type of general and CDIO-related activities
taking place in the different spaces.

A Introduction
This investigation was carried out in order to survey the activities and physical spaces with respect to
workshops and laboratories used at the Vehicle Engineering Program at KTH. It has been of special
interest to view the issues from the CDIO ( Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate) perspective.
The survey was done through personal interviews with teachers or equivalent staff at the different
departments that are essential for the Vehicle Engineering Program.
In order to cover those premises that are used by the students but outside the responsibility of the actual
departments, a representative (Swe: SNO) of the Student Union of the Vehicle Engineering Program has
been involved.
C Questionnaire
The inquiry form that was used during the interview was designed in co-operation with the Chairman of
the Vehicle Engineering Program, Sören Östlund. The form and the specific answers from the different
departments are shown in appendix.

E Complementary premises
As a general resource, for the students at the Schools of Vehicle Engineering, Mechanical Engineering
and Materials Technology, there are 16 computer classrooms in total, with 237 seats / PCs. These are
commonly used by the students as workplaces insofar as they are always accessible.
The locality "T-centralen" is directly managed by the Vehicle Engineering Students themselves. T-
centralen is mainly used for recreation between and after classes but also a place for individual studies,
group work as well as guidance between students.
E Conclusions
A survey of activities and physical spaces with respect to workshop and laboratory activities in the
Vehicle Engineering Program at KTH was presented. Faculty, or equivalent staff at departments that are
essential in the structure of the Vehicle Engineering Program, have responded as to the number of
students involved in laboratory and workshop activities at their respective departments. They have also
reported the equipment available in their respective locales, as well as general and CDIO activities
taking place there.
The results of the survey show that there is a strong relation between the type of subject and the use of
workshops and laboratories. In mathematics and numerical analysis, and computing science, there are
only a few students involved in activities which take place in particular workshop or laboratory spaces;
even then, these students are in a Student Work Place Mode. On the other hand, in more applied
subjects represented by the departments of Machine Design, Vehicle Engineering, and Aeronautics, a
large number of students are involved in more or less all of the eight different workshops and laboratory
activities considered in this investigation. Departments representing traditional engineering science
subjects like mechanics and solid mechanics typically end up somewhere between these two extremes.
The workshop and laboratory activities are dominated by four activities reflecting quite traditional use
of workshops and laboratory space as shown in Table D2. These four are Class Lab Mode, Laboratory
Work Mode, Student Work Place Mode and Teaching in Labs Mode. Design Product Mode is used at
the departments of Machine Design, Vehicle Engineering and Aeronautics. The Tinkering mode is used
at the departments of Machine Design and Aeronautics. Only at the department of Aeronautics are
students involved in activities of the type Large System Mode. Table D2 also shows that only about
20% of the students of the Vehicle Engineering Program carry out their diploma thesis work in spaces
belonging to a department at KTH essential to the structure of the Vehicle Engineering Program. This
reflects the fact that the overwhelming majority of students at KTH carry out their diploma thesis work
in industry. Furthermore, Table D1 indicates that approximately 40% of the students from the Vehicle
Engineering Program carry out their diploma thesis under the supervision of a department that does not
belong to the core structure of the Vehicle Engineering Program.
A conclusion that can be drawn from the survey is that there are a large number of workshops and
laboratory space activities for the students at the Vehicle Engineering Program. However, the use of
these locales is still, with few exceptions, dominated by quite traditional activities such as laboratory
demonstrations, laboratories using pre-prepared laboratory equipment, and students working
individually or in small teams. Student work characterized by the Design Product Mode, Large System
Mode and Tinkering Mode is still limited, and an increase in these Modes would be desirable.
It should finally be emphasized that CDIO activities have in this investigation been interpreted in a very
general sense. CDIO activities are in general associated with conceiving, designing, implementing and
operating new products and systems. The Vehicle Engineering Program at KTH has a strong tradition in
engineering analysis, and traditional product development is not the key issue in many of its in-depth
19
specializations. The CDIO concept can, with minor modifications, be translated to subjects with a more
analysis-oriented approach reflecting different parts of, for example, sound and vibration analysis of a
new product. Nevertheless, the development of new products and systems should be an underlying issue
in these subjects as well.
