    Re: Elective request from UCT final year occupational therapy student

    Thank you for considering our student’s request to conduct an elective at your organisation.
    This letter confirms that a three-week (120 hour) elective forms part of our final year occupational therapy
    students’ course requirements.

    Students are required to arrange an elective at a site of their choice as per direct arrangement with the site
    in question. In 2023 the elective will take place any time between the 16 June and 23 July 2023. Once a
    site has agreed to host a student by communicating directly with them, the Division of Occupational
    Therapy will send on the necessary documentation to the occupational therapist at the site. It is important
    that the site offers occupational therapy services and has a full-time occupational therapist in their employ
    who is able to supervise the student and provide role-modelling opportunities. There are no formal
    academic requirements connected with the elective beyond accruing a total of 120 practice hours. The site
    may determine how it is best to accommodate the student based on their needs and the day to day
    requirements of the occupational therapy service. Students may offer direct service as part of their elective
    provided this is under the supervision of the qualified and registered occupational therapist.
