Chapter 5

Prayer

Jesus prayed for us:

John 17:9-26 “I pray for them. I do not pray for the world but for those whom You have
given Me, for they are Yours. 10And all Mine are Yours, and Yours are Mine, and I am
glorified in them. 11Now I am no longer in the world, but these are in the world, and I
come to You, Holy Father, keep through Your name those whom You have given Me, that
they may be one as We are. 12While I was with them in the world, I kept them in Your
name. Those whom You gave Me I have kept; and none of them is lost except the son of
perdition, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13But now I come to You, and these things
I speak in the world, that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves. 14I have given
them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as
I am not of the world. 15I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that
You should keep them from the evil one. 16They are not of the world, just as I am not of
the world. 17Sancitify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18As You sent Me into the
world, I also have sent them into the world. 19And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that
they also may be sanctified by the truth. 20I do not pray for these alone, but also for those
who will believe in Me through their word; 21that they all may be one, as You, Father, are
in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You
sent Me. 22And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just
as We are one; 23I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that
the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
24Father, I desire that they also whom You gave Me may be with Me where I am, that they
may behold My glory which You have given Me; for You loved Me before the foundation
of the world. 25O righteous Father! The world has not known You, but I have known You;
and these have known that You sent Me. 26And I have declared to them Your name, and
will declare it, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them, and I in them.”
Jesus prayed that we would be one with each other and with God. Why hasn’t His prayer
been answered? Maybe it’s because everything is in God the Creator’s timing. He must
have prayed believing (Mark 11:24 below) and He did pray for us in this day and age in
verse 20. It’s been over 2000 years since He prayed this prayer. Maybe we are the
generation to accomplish this. So many people through the years look at the weather and
wars and say this is the end, but the weather and the wars have always come. Maybe we
need to become one as Jesus and the Father and the Spirit are One. So don’t pray for the
end of the world, but pray with Jesus that we become one.
Matthew 24:6 “And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not
troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.”

Jesus also prayed in verse 15 to keep them from the evil one. Jesus also taught us how to
overcome the evil one with the word of God. If you don’t know what to pray then open
the Bible and read out loud.
Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not
seen. Faith is belief and trust in God. Reading the Bible or scripture is showing your
faith.

43
2 Corinthians 5:7 For we walk by faith, not by sight.
Matthew 17:20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to
you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here
to there.’ And it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.
Speak your faith. Don’t just think it. If you are sick or helping someone who is sick,
then speak your faith: Say ‘I am (they are) getting better every day in every way. Thank
you God.’ If you have a mountain in your life to move; then say out loud ‘Move this
mountain, oh Lord. Thank you, God.’ And He will move it. BELIEVE
Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that
you receive them, and you will have them.”
Praying and believing is an act of faith. It is also supernatural. When you pray believing,
you are touching God Almighty.

Mark 1:35 Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out
and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.
Jesus gave us many examples; praying was not just an example, but a way of life.

Luke 10:2-11 & 16 Then He said to them, “The harvest truly is great, but the laborers
are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3Go
your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. 4Carry neither money bag,
knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. 5But whatever house you enter,
first say, ‘Peace to this house.” 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it;
if not, it will return to you.
Pray for help and the prayer of peace lets you know if the son of peace is there or
something evil. The peace will come back to you if it cannot be a peaceful house that
you have come into. Prayer is asking and it can just be praising God. You can praise
God and ask in the same prayer and thank Him in the same prayer because you have
prayed believing.

Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will
be opened to you.”
ASK – how do you ask God for anything? You just ask. You don’t have to say anything
out loud; prayers are thoughts most of the time. He is also telling you to ask if you want
something or need something because if you don’t ask then it might not be given to you.
Asking God is prayer. Talking to God is prayer. Matthew 5-6:4 is all Jesus speaking.
Jesus gives the Beatitudes, the Sermon on the Mount… He talks of your spirituality and
how to be perfect. Yet none of us is perfect and that is the part Jesus covers when we
pray, because Jesus is perfect. Matthew 6:5- Matthew7 are all about prayer. That’s your
spirit touching God through prayer. The end of chapter 7 in Matthew, Jesus tells how to
discern good people from bad by seeing if they do God’s will.

God is Father the creator. He sent Jesus so the Word became flesh. Jesus died and was
resurrected then God sent the Holy Spirit to be with us. This is the way that God can be
everywhere at once because His Spirit joins with ours. We are embodied souls. He
became flesh and He experienced what we experience in life. God doesn’t have to look

44
upon our sin because Jesus covers us and God sees us through Jesus. If you ever have
trouble looking at God’s people, then look at them through Jesus.

Jesus told us to ASK that is praying

Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will
be opened to you.” A sk

Jesus tells us twice in the same verse to ASK, asking is prayer. Maybe this is just in
English that He tells us twice to pray, but English is the universal language now.

Matthew 18: 19, 20 “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning
anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. 20“For where two
or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”
If two of you agree; just two, you can ask for anything.
John 14:14 “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
1John 5:14, 15 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything
according to His will, He hears us.
According to His will, that’s where our confidence comes from. Pray believing, but pray
for things in God’s will not yours.

God wants to hear from you. He also wants you to pray for others.

2Thessalonians 3:1,2 Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run
swiftly and be glorified, just as it is with you, 2and that we may be delivered from
unreasonable and wicked men; for not all have faith.
James 5:15 And the prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise him up.
And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.
James 5:16 Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you
may be healed.

Matthew 6:6 “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your
door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret
will reward you openly.”

Jesus gave us a prayer as an example, it is called the Lord’s prayer. Right before that He
tells us not to chant to God or make vain repetitions,
Matthew 6:7 “And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For
they think that they will be heard for their many words.”
so this prayer is to show you what needs to go in a prayer. Speak of God’s majesty, ask
for what you need, Thank God. Amen means so be it. A prayer as simple as a little boy

45
praying for his father saying “God, Dad” does the trick. God just wants to hear from you.
From your heart.
Matthew 6:9-13 “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be
Your name. 10Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us
this day our daily bread. 12And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13And do
not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom
and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
Jesus repeats Himself in verse 6:14 forgive or you will not be forgiven. Forgiveness
releases you from the person you forgive.
Matthew 6:14 “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also
forgive you.”

Philippians 4:6, 7 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication,
with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; 7and the peace of God,
which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ
Jesus.
Worry about nothing, Pray about everything.
Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about
its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew 7:12 “Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this
is the Law and the Prophets.”

Psalm 4:4 Be angry, and do not sin. Meditate within your heart on your bed, and be still.

Psalm 34:4 I sought the LORD and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Jesus’ commands pertaining to prayer:

Matthew 6 and 7 are about prayer and giving.

Matthew 9:38 “Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His
harvest.”
Matthew 11:28, 29 “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give
you rest. 29Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in
heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Mark 9:28, 29 And when He had come into the house, His disciples asked him
privately, “Why could we not cast it out?” 29So He said to them, “This kind can come out
by nothing but prayer and fasting.” The disciples had tried to cast a demon out of a
person.
Mark 11:17 Then He taught, saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called
a house of prayer for all nations’”
Mark 11:23 “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed
and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he
says will be done, he will have whatever he says.”

46
Mark 11:24 “Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that
you receive them, and you will have them.”
Mark 11:25 “And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone,
forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.”
Mark 12:38-40 Then He said to them in His teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who desire
to go around in long robes, love greetings in the marketplace, 39the best seats in the
synagogues, and the best places at feasts, 40who devour widows houses, and for a
pretense make long prayers. These will receive greater condemnation.”
Mark 13:31-33 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass
away. 32But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the
Son, but only the Father. 33Take heed, watch and pray, for you do not know when the time
is.”
Mark 13:37 “And what I say to you, I say to all, Watch!”
Mark 14:38 “Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak.”

Luke 8:50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only
believe, and she will be made well.”
5But whatever house you enter,
first say, ‘Peace to this house.” 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it;
if not, it will return to you. 7And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such
things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to
house. 8Whatever city you enter and they receive you, eat such things as are set before
you, 9and heal the sick there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to
you.’ 10But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets
and say, 11’The very dust of your city which clings to us we wipe off against you.’”
Luke 11:2- 4 So He said to them, “When you pray, say:
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily
Bread. And forgive us our sins. For we also forgive everyone who is
indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil

one.”
Luke 11:9 “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;
knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Luke 18:1 Then He spoke a parable to them, that men always ought to pray and not lose
heart.
Luke 21: 34- 36 “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with
carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly.
35For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.
36Watch therefore and pray always that you may be counted worthy to escape all these
things that will come to pass, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

47
Luke 22:40 When He came to the place (Mount of Olives), He said to them, “Pray that
you may not enter into temptation.”

John 7:37, 38 On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out,
saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. 38He who believes in Me, as the
Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
John 15:4 “Abide in Me, and I in you.”
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the
world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 20:27 Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands;
and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but
believing.”
John 20:29 Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed.
Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”

Revelation 3:3 “Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and
repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not
know what hour I will come upon you.”
Revelation 16:15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps
his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”
