EXPERIMENT 1: BASIC MEASUREMENT (LENGTH, VOLUME AND DENSITY)

OBJECTIVE
1. To determine the volume and density of ball bearing
2. To determine the volume and density of wooden block.

APPARATUS
1. Vernier caliper
2. Micrometer screw gauge
3. Weighting scale
4. Ball bearing
5. Wooden block

PROCEDURE

A. Micrometer Screw Gauge

1. The zero error was determined.
2. The diameter of the ball bearing was measured.
3. Step 2 was repeated at least 3 times of different position of the ball bearing.
4. All data was recorded in a suitable table.
5. The actual diameter reding calculated and was taken into consideration the zero
error obtained.
6. The weight of the ball bearing was determined.
7. The density of the ball bearing was calculated.

B. Vernier caliper
1. The whole number of small divisions was counted on the fixed part of the caliper
that are to the left of the “0” mark on the vernier caliper.
2. The first mark was found on the vernier that line up with one of the marks on the
fixed part of the caliper.
3. The zero error of the vernier caliper was determined.
4. The length, width and thickness of the wooden block was measured by using the
vernier caliper.
5. Step 2 was repeated at least 3 times at the different position of the wooden
block.
6. All data was recorded in a suitable table.
7. Actual measurement was calculated by taking into consideration the zero error
obtained earlier.
8. The weight of the wooden block was determined.
9. The density of the wooden block was calculated.
