MMSU SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY JOURNAL

Guide to Authors

The Science and Technology Journal is a semi-annual multi-disciplinary journal

published by the Mariano Marcos State University, which features original and unpublished
research papers including theses/dissertations that advance the knowledge of natural and
applied sciences, trade and industry, health and environment, education, socio-economics,
information technology, engineering, and other allied fields. Authors are required to submit to
the Editorial Board a Certification of Originality/Unpublished Work and a Confirmation of
Consent for Publication.
Articles accepted are those outputs of research studies conducted within the last five years
immediately preceding the publication date of a journal issue. Submitted papers are read and
evaluated by a technical review board to determine the merits of publication. In addition, the
selected papers undergo blind-refereeing by respective specialists.
The following guidelines should be adhered to standardize the submission of articles.
Manuscript Preparation
1. Articles should not be longer than 30 pages, including tables, figures, references, and
abstracts. It should be typed in MS Word format, double-spaced on A4 paper size, with 1-
inch margin in all sides, using sanscript font (e-g. Arial), 11 points.
2. Illustrations, figures, and tables should be placed just after they were cited. They should be
numbered with Arabic numerals and should carry brief descriptive titles.
 Tables should have at least three columns. Columns that show no significant
variations should be omitted.
 Titles should be clear, and column headings should be brief with units of
measurements in parentheses.
 Only the first letter of the first word of titles and headings should be capitalized; the
rest should be presented in lower case unless proper nouns. Type size of tables
should not be reduced to accommodate data.
 Symbols and abbreviations should be defined below each table.

3. Figures/illustrations include line drawings, pictures, and computer plots. Magnification of

figures (if needed) should be given by scale. The size should not exceed a full manuscript
page. Pictures should be submitted in jpeg, tif, or png format with accompanying captions.
4. Except the first page, all pages should be numbered at the bottom center of the page,
including those with tables and figures.
5. Footnotes in the text should be avoided. Ancillary information should appear in the text set
off in parenthesis.
6. In-text citations must follow the APA 6th Edition 2010 Recommended format.
7. The International System or metric units of measurement should be used. The following
abbreviations are acceptable: h, min, s, yr, mo, wk, km, m, cm, mm, kg, g mg, ml, etc.,
without periods. Use l for liter and % instead of percent. Designate temperature as in 27 oC.
For names of months, use three letters without the period as "Jan, Mar, Apr," etc. Symbols,
abbreviations, and acronyms should be defined when they are used first. Abbreviate units of
measurement only beside numerals; otherwise, spell out the units. Write the unit and
numeral without space (4m, 15m2). For numbers, write out one to nine unless they are
followed by unit of measurement (e.g., two species, 3 cm). Day, month, and year should be
written as "11 May 2018."

Format
The paper should contain the following parts:
1. Title page. The title should be printed in capital letters and must accurately identify and
describe the manuscript's contents. To facilitate the processing of papers while
protecting anonymity in the peer review, authors should identify themselves only on the
title page that should precede the article. Honorary authors are not allowed. A person
who has nothing to do with the analysis of data and writing of the paper and who cannot
assume responsibility for the technical content of the paper cannot be considered an
author. Include each author's complete mailing address and/or institutional affiliation on
the title page. Indicate the author to whom correspondence should be addressed by
putting an asterisk (*) after the name and the author's e-mail address. Indicate whether
the research is the portion of a thesis or dissertation and the sources of the research
fund.

2. Abstract. This is a concise summary of the important points of the paper, not to exceed
250 words. The abstract should be placed on a page after the title page. The title of the
paper should be indicated above the abstract. Keywords and phrases should not be
more than five and be arranged alphabetically to be written just after the abstract.
3. Body of the Paper. This section starts on page 3 and includes the introduction,
methodology, results and discussion, conclusion, implication, and recommendation. Set
headings at the center in boldface. Sub-headings should be aligned on the left of the
page and set in boldface and italics.
o The introduction includes a brief background of the study, statement of the
problem and its importance, a short survey of relevant literature, and the
research objectives. This should be written without subheadings of its different
components.
o The methodology includes the locale of the study, the research design, the
variables of the study, including the theoretical/conceptual framework of the
study, data gathering procedure, and statistical analysis.
o The results and discussion could be presented together or separately
depending on what best conveys the research outputs. Brevity and clarity of
arguments must be observed so that the problems/objectives of the study are
addressed.
o The conclusion(s) contain(s) an overview of the study's results and findings,
particularly to answer the objectives. The collected data should support them.
o The implication(s) reflect(s) the interpretation and insight(s) of the researcher as
to how knowledge users would involve themselves in applying the recommended
technologies or decisions and actions generated from the research.
o The recommendation(s) should be brief and relevant, reflecting how such
findings and best practice(s) gained from the research be applied in resolving a
problem or issue.
4. Literature cited. This should contain a listing of the references used by the investigator
related to his/her research work. The following should be considered in preparing of list
of reference:
 The authors should be arranged alphabetically regardless of the type of
reference. Check that the list is in alphabetical order by surname of the first
author (treat Mc and Mac alphabetically and literally, not as if they were all
spelled 'Mac').
 Names should begin upper case then lower case.
 Where several references have the same author(s), do not use ditto marks or em
dashes; the name must be repeated each time.
 Last Names containing de, van, von, De, Van, Von, de la, etc. should be
alphabetized according to the language of origin.
 Names containing Jr or II should be listed as follows:
- Author Last Name, Initials, Jr. (year).
- Author Last Name, Initials, II (year).
 When arranging several works by the same first author:
- Single-author references arranged in date order, the earliest first;
- Single-author entries precede multiple-author entries beginning with the
same surname
- Two or more author references in alphabetical order according to the
second author's last name, or if the second author is the same, the last
name of the third author, and so on
- References with the same authors in the same order are arranged by
year of publication, the earliest first:

 Check that all periodical data are included – volume and page numbers
(complete span, not shortened), publisher, place of publication, etc. Only give the
issue number in parentheses immediately after the volume number if each issue
of a journal begins on page 1.

 The date of retrieval of an online material is no longer required, only the URL

 A word about publisher locations in book references: for all countries outside the
US, the country as well as the city of publication should be supplied, e.g.
'London, UK', 'Oxford, UK', 'Toronto, Canada', etc. For the US, the state
abbreviation should be included after the city, except when the name of the state
is part of the publisher's name, e.g. 'New York, NY: Cambridge University Press';
'New York: State University of New York'; 'Minneapolis: University of Minnesota
Press'.
