Grade 11

The lesson plan discusses stem and leaf plots. The learning objectives are for students to be able to define a stem and leaf plot, construct a stem and leaf plot, and appreciate their importance. The teacher will motivate students with a puzzle activity before presenting what stem and leaf plots are and how to make them. Students will then work in groups on an activity to construct a stem and leaf plot, frequency distribution, and cumulative frequency from sales data.

III. Procedure
TEACHER’S ACTIVITY STUDENTS’ ACTIVITY

A. Preliminary Activities

a. Prayer
Let us all stand and feel the presence of the
lord. “The student will lead the prayer.”

b. Greetings and Energizer

good morning grade 11

(Student do as told)

“Before you take your seat, please pick those (Students do as told)
scattered pieces of plastic and paper under your
chair.”
B. Checking the attendance

Anyone absent today?”

“None, ma’am! “
“That is good to hear!” You have a perfect
attendance.

d. Imposing the rules

Before we formally start our lesson for today, I will
impose my rules first during our discussion. First, avoid
talking with your seatmates during our discussion.
Next, if you want to answer, please raise your right
hand, lastly listen very carefully. Understood?
“Yes, ma’am”

C. Review

“Who can still remember our previous topic?” “Yes,

Trisha?”
Measurement scales

What are the four level of Measurement scale? Nominal , Ordinal , interval , ratio level

“Very good Trisha. Last meeting, we talked

measurement scales. Do you have any questions about our
last topic?”
“None so far, Ma’am.”

D. MOTIVATION

Okay class, before we proceed to our new lesson. I have

an activity. I will divide you into two groups. I need one
representative each group to choose these two rolled paper.
I have here a puzzle. I want you to reassemble this puzzle.

( student do as told)

We observed that the puzzle, it has form a

tree.
We observed that the puzzle, it has form a
flower or sunflower

Did you enjoy your activity?

What have you observed in the puzzle that you

solved?

Very good!

Class, based on the activity, do you have any idea what

is our topic this morning?

g. Statements of the aim (students do as told)

In this discussion, you are expected to meet these
objectives,
Learning Objectives
A. Define the stem and leaf plot
B. Construct a stem and leaf plot
C. Appreciate the importance of stem and leaf plot in
real life
I want you to lend me your ears because this
morning, we are going to discuss about

Stem and leaf plot

Stem and Leaf plot

“Class, kindly read.”

B. Presentation
Before we unfold the main lesson, let us first define
What is Stem and leaf plot?

is a special table where each data value is split into a

"stem" (the first digit or digits) and a "leaf" (usually the last
digit).

Steps in constructing a stem and leaf plot

1. Divide each measurement into two parts: stem

and leaf.
2. List the stem in column, with a vertical line to
the right.
3. For each measurement, record the leaf portion in
the same row as its corresponding stem.
4. Order the leaves from lowest to highest in each
stem.

Example
Daily sales of desktop computers of JRC Computer
Company for 30 days.

34 40 28 33 26 21
45 30 38 60 42 30
31 35 28 42 39 43
22 33 20 28 42 51
50 25 21 37 47 35

Reordering
2 011256888

4 02222357
5 01
6 0
The range in statistics for a given data set is the difference
between the highest and lowest values.

The size of the class interval is dependent upon the

number of values to be included in the distribution.

The frequency distribution is an arrangement of

numerical data according to size.

Solution:
1. Construct a stem and leaf plot

2 011256888
3 0133455789
4 02222357
5 01
6 0

2. Compute the range

Range = 60 – 20 = 40

3. Compute the class interval

Class interval = =8

4. Using the stem and leaf plot, we now construct the

frequency distribution,

Amount of sales Number of sales

Class intervals Frequency
20 – 27 6
28 – 35 10
36 – 43 9
44 – 51 4
52 – 59 0
60 – 67 1
Total 30

A distribution in which the frequencies are cumulated is

called cumulative frequency distribution. It shows the
total frequency below the upper limit of the groups or
classes. Taking the previous example,
Class interval frequency Cumulative
frequency
20 - 27 6 6
28- 35 10 16
36 - 43 9 25
44- 51 4 29
52 - 59 0 29
60 - 67 1 30

C. Activity

I have here an activity!

Direction: I will divide you into 2 groups and each

group will choose a representative. I have here a same
problem. The group who will finish first to answer will be
given points.

1. Construct a frequency distribution from the

d. Using the stem and leaf plot, we now construct
the frequency distribution and cumulative Ordering

I will give you 3 to 5 minutes to do the activity.

F. VALUING

Okay class, In our topic how can you describe the stem
and leaf in your family?
Just like this quotes:
“ kung ano puno sya rin ang bunga”
Ma’am we describe the stem and leaf like
just like my father and mother they are the
stem and also the leaf is their children.

Wow, awesome idea!

Yes, we can relate the stem and leaf in our family
because the stem is the one who gives life and support the
leaf just like you now today.
Yes, ma’am.
Now, your parents give your support today?

In what why? My needs in school ma’am.

That’s right!

What else? My passion ma’am.

Very good!

Your mother and father would do everything to make their

children (you as student) live and experience a happy life.
Am I clear?
Yes, ma’am.

G. EVALUATION

Direction: complete the statements by writing the correct

answer in the blanks.
