This self-assessment tool is designed for applicants to review the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) areas of
assessment and self-reflect to determine whether they are at their competitive best. This self-assessment
tool will provide applicants an understanding of each area of assessment and strive for improvement in any
area they may need further development.
*Note: The self-assessment tool is a guideline only and does not guarantee an applicant will be
successful in the recruitment process as many variables are considered when reviewing an applicant file.

Motivation
Refers to the reason the applicant is interested in a policing career; it is not an impulsive career choice and
the applicant demonstrates an understanding of all that is required to prepare and learn about the
profession. The applicant further demonstrates an understanding of the commitment involved in a policing
career, and utilizes different ways of staying informed about the OPP; explain your interest in this

Leadership

Community Focus
Police officers are committed to serving and protecting their community. Continuous volunteer work or
helping others within the community (i.e. neighbours, family members) is an indicator of an applicant’s
level of interest in bettering their community as a whole.

Driving
Applicants should strive to develop their driving skills while demonstrating respect for the rules of the road,
which may include partaking in additional driver training, having sufficient driving experience on different
roads, and in different weather conditions. Applicants must possess a full ‘G’ license, have limited driving
infractions, collisions and have no more than six (6) demerit points.

Education
Applicants must possess a grade 12 education and/or post-secondary education. Military/trades training is
also acceptable. Continuous learning/traditional teachings also show personal development. To be
successful at the Ontario Police College (OPC), an applicant must score a minimum of 75% in all courses
during their police training.
A commitment to continuous learning is a required competency for a career in policing as legislation and
procedures are consistently evolving. Applicants must demonstrate a dedication to continuous learning
and professional development.

Employment
Uniform Recruitment looks for applicants who demonstrate a positive employment history with consistent
reliable, responsible and trustworthy behaviour in the work place.
Applicants should demonstrate their ability to have strong relationships with current and past employers as
well as their leadership traits and consistent effort to strive for self-improvement. Special skills obtained
through employment training/experience may be transferable to a policing career.
A successful applicant will have demonstrated their related accomplishments and be able to effectively
articulate their transferable skills.

Fitness
Being physically and mentally fit is essential in maintaining a healthy work/life balance and demonstrates
the applicant’s ability to be resilient; which is vital for a successful policing career. Being able to
demonstrate a consistent commitment to fitness and the ability to meet OPP standards and fitness
requirements, will contribute to an applicant’s level of competitiveness.
Applicants must complete fitness logs demonstrating their fitness abilities which include, but are not limited
to, completing self-tests of the Ontario Fitness Pin Test (demonstrate their ability to achieve 75% to pass),
ability to achieve a level 7 on the Leger 20m Shuttle Run as well as an overall ability and understanding of
the PREP test.
