Mental health and well-being of children in the Philippine setting

during the COVID-19 pandemic Malolos et al, (2021)

The COVID-19 pandemic seems to be in control for more than (2) two
years, many things somehow changed and still changing that appears to have an
impact in the mental health and well-being of Filipino children. Children are
considered to be among the most vulnerable group of individuals in the society
that includes the risks that they may experienced beyond their control. The group
of researchers from the Philippines last 2021 with the assistance of different
organization concluded that the occurrence of challenging state of mental well-
being of Filipino children has been gradually worsened in regard to the pandemic
and limited mental health policies of government, Malolos et al (2021).
The status of mental health system for children in the Philippines may lead
to higher tendencies for mental health related problems such as anxiety,
depression, and stress. The UNICEF identified that children during pandemic
time experiencing trifecta of threats that contain direct consequences of disease,
interruption of significant services, and the rapid increase in poverty. The
pandemic resulted fear and anxiety on Filipino children because of the sudden
shift of face-to-face class to online and modular class. Most of the children and at
the same time students tend to adjust well with the support of their family, yet the
limited communication with their peers seem to affect their mental health and
well-being. Thus, the continuous coming of different tropical typhoons that
resulted to heavy flood in which most of the families turned out to be homeless
and hopeless tool. However, the increasing number of violence, abuse, and
exploitation of children seem to be rampant.
In relation to the above-mentioned statement in regard to the rapid
increase in number of violence, abuse, and exploitation of children in which the
average number of years before being rescued seems to be in need for a
significant call to those individuals in authority. The parents who tend to be the
perpetrators might be dealing as well with mental health problems. The inability
to cope with the demand of pandemic appears to influence the decision-making
style of most of the parents, in which the only thing that matters to them is
surviving and not being right and just in accordance to the law. Poverty can affect
the neurocognitive functioning of individuals Loughan & Perna, (2012). Due to
lack of resources, parents who tend to engaged their children to the thing called
“show” may somehow have difficulty nor having limited knowledge about the
implications that may arise as they continue to do so. They are unaware that they
may be subjected to lifelong imprisonment because they are violating laws, in
easing their children at risks.
However, the children who are identified as survivors are vulnerable to
experience trauma and anxiety after being rescued because of the sudden
separation from their family and necessary adjustment to institutional
environment and practices. The government should implement certain rules and
regulations about this, also to innovate their usual strategies in identifying areas
in which exploitation, abuse, and violence takes place. Raising awareness about
this current trends and issues must be a priority. Also, the support for different
institutions that take care the survivors, their services must be evaluated to
further identify the most essential and effective intervention that surely benefit the
mental health and well-being of children.

The rise of psychologists

Psychological expertise is in demand everywhere Pappas (2022)

According to American Psychological Association dictionary, psychologist

is an individual who is professionally trained in one or more branches or subfields
of psychology. At present, the demand for psychology professionals and experts
seem to spread because of the mental issues that tends to rise. The decline in
stigma may be a possible factor in which the modern world with the assistance of
technology is somehow innovating. Thus, even the athletes or other well-known
personalities are seeking for mental health practitioners that appears to be
beneficial in their well-being for them to perform better and to become effective in
every way.
The promotion of equity, diversity, and inclusion somehow sought to
conclude the fast-growing field of psychologist. Then, with the influence of politics
and policy in which psychologist expanded the role in the public sphere. Also, the
usage of technology in practice that influence practitioners to multidisciplinary
strategies. In addition, the entertainment, media, and sports extend the advocacy
and awareness in regard to the said supplements of psychology to every
individual.
Contrary to other nations, the mental health services among Filipinos are
still limited because of the stigma as identified to be the barrier Martinez, et.al
(2020). Although, the government already implemented mental health law last
2017, in which better opportunities for mental health are expected to increase.
However, the current situation of Philippines is somehow challenging, in which
there is really a call for mental health practitioners.
Being one of those mental health practitioners who tends to keep the
passion and profession. I am still young in practice, in which I cannot conclude
yet but upon my own observation with the current status of mental health here in
the Philippines, practitioners are still limited to do their roles. There is shortage in
mental health career opportunities, most of the psychometricians and
psychologists are unable to find company that somehow fit with their
qualifications.
However, I am still hoping that expertise and knowledge of registered
psychologists here in the Philippines will be put into practice. Many filipinos are in
need of psychological services but they lack awareness on where to go, and
whom to ask help because of limited resources. Advocacy in regard to equity,
diversity, and inclusion may be beneficial to somehow educate the public about
mental health in which filipinos with mental health conditions may be given right
and just service that they need to be able to function well at the best of their
potentials. Thus, mental health stigma will never be a hindrance anymore.
