Substation Breaker – Periodic Maintenance
TD -001 1 Year Variable N N
To be completed online and is estimated to take 4 man hours.
General:
Verify the area is clean and clear of operating obstructions.
Visually inspect the external surfaces for rust and corrosion.
Visually check the control box for corroded wiring terminations and jumpers.
Operate the breaker if possible. Do this only if the facility is down.
For SF6 Circuit Breakers:
Verify and document the pressures on the SF6 gas.
If applicable, verify and document the pressure on the air operator of the breaker.
Measure and record the equalize/float voltage. Compare this value to design setting. Adjust if necessary.
Measure and record each of the cell voltages.
Visually inspect each of the cell connections. Remove any corrosion build-up.
Visually inspect the electrolyte levels of all cells. Top off with distilled or de- ionized water if needed.
FOR LEAD ACID BATTERIES ONLY: Take specific gravity readings.
Visually inspect all cell jars for cracks and other damage.
Rinse flame arrestor vent cap with distilled/de-ionized water and air dry.
STD-0552 5 Years Variable Y Y Switchgear Batteries – Major Maintenance
To be completed offline and is estimated to take 16 man hours.
Both Ni-Cad and Lead acid battery systems should be discharged with each cell being monitored. Any weak cells should be
drained and equalized. If they remain weak they should be replaced.
STD-0553 4 years Variable Y N Protective Relay – Major Calibration
To be completed online and estimated time can vary greatly.
Calibrate all electromechanical protective relays.
Verify all protective relay settings against those listed in the relay setting drawings. CAUTION: if settings are different from
drawings, verify the accuracy of the drawings before changing relay settings.
Calibrate Watts Transducers. Verify all watts transducer settings against relay setting drawings.
CAUTION: If settings are different from drawings, verify the accuracy of the drawings before changing relay settings.
If repairs are required (whether performed during periodic maintenance or scheduled for a later date) open a PM-R in the EAM
system.
For Bus Duct:
Applies to electrical Equipment greater than 600V up to 15 kV
Visually inspect the exterior enclosure of the bus duct for any signs of corrosion, excessive rusting or missing hardware.
Verify (by visual inspection only) that any weep holes are open, correctly orientated, and free of moisture.
Inspect joint exteriors for any signs of moisture intrusion (damaged or corroded gaskets or sealant, signs of previous seepage,
etc.).
STD-0573 5 Years Variable Y Y Transformer – Major Maintenance
To be completed offline and is estimated to take 24 man hours.
Perform all applicable steps identified in the appropriate major maintenance
forms in SMP-132.
For Bus Duct:
Applies to electrical Equipment greater than 600V up to 15kV
(Refer to SMP-030, Preventative Maintenance for Major Electrical Equipment)
Open the bus duct transformer terminal box, and visually inspect the interior for moisture, corrosion, overheating, or other
abnormalities.
Disconnect the flexible connectors at the transformers, and perform a 60- second phase-to-phase insulation resistance test
according to the table below.
With the flexible connectors still disconnected, perform a 60-second phase-to- ground insulation resistance test according to the
table below.
Insulation Resistance Tests (Phase-Phase and Phase-Ground)
System Voltage -Minimum Insulation Resistance
Less than 600V - 1 Mohm
600 to 2500V- 3.5 Mohm
Greater than 2500V -16 M ohm
Check each bus duct phase resistance from the transformer secondary connection to the MCC/Contactors/Switchgear, and record
in data sheet.
STD-0574
Transformer, Dry Type – Periodic Maintenance Applies to Power
Distribution Transformers Only
Recommended Interval: 1 Year (refer to SMP-132, Preventative Maintenance
for Transformers)
Type (Duplicate/Fixed/Variable): Variable Outside Expertise Required
(Y/N)? N Requires Product Outage (Y/N/Possibly)? N
To be completed online and is estimated to take 4 man hours.
Visually inspect for evidence of overheating and other physical damage.
Assure that all ventilation louvers are open and clear of debris. Also, assure that no objects are blocking the exterior of the
transformer, causing a reduction in ventilation.
If applicable, confirm operation of any cooling fans.
Verify that the core, frame and enclosure are adequately grounded and that all ground connections are secure and free of
corrosion.
STD-0580 Motor Space/Terminal Box Heater Periodic Inspection
Recommended Interval: 1 to 3 Years (refer to SMP-030, Preventative
Maintenance for Major Electrical Equipment)
Type (Duplicate/Fixed/Variable): Variable Outside Expertise Required
(Y/N)? N Requires Product Outage (Y/N/Possibly)? Y
To be completed offline and is estimated to take 1 man hour.
With the motor down, verify proper operation of the motor space heaters
(including terminal box heaters and enclosure heaters) by taking ammeter readings of the heater supply.
NOTE: Plant may consider installing permanent ammeters to monitor proper operation of motor space heaters.
Inspect slip rings and clean slip-ring area of all carbon dust by vacuuming.
Inspect brush studs to ensure tightness. Tighten if needed.
Verify the spring tension is within the manufacturer's recommendations. Adjust if necessary.
Verify brush shunts are properly connected to brushes and holders.
STD-0590
Motors, Random Wound – Periodic Maintenance
Recommended Interval: 1 to 3 Years (refer to SMP-030, section 7.2,
Preventative Maintenance for Major Electrical Equipment)
Type (Duplicate/Fixed/Variable): Variable Outside Expertise Required
(Y/N)? N Requires Product Outage (Y/N/Possibly)? N
To be completed online and is estimated to take 1 man hour.
This PM applies to Critical Motors 600 V and lower, including pump/motor combinations.
Visually inspect for abnormalities.
Loose foundation bolts.
Abnormal/churning sound, vibrations and smell.
Bearing temperatures.
Cleanliness environment.
Check fan guard for cleanliness (make sure it’s not plugged).
In case of problem, take corrective actions.
Verify that the motor is adequately grounded and that all ground connections are secure and free of corrosion.
If built-in load bank test system is not installed, perform load test with portable load bank tester or actual system load.
Inspect bolted connections for high resistance using a low resistance ohmmeter.
Verify operation and sequencing of interlocking systems if applicable.
Verify that phase-barrier mounting is intact.
Use appropriate lubrication on moving, current carrying parts and on moving and sliding surfaces.
Measure contact resistance across each switchblade assembly and fuseholder.
Perform insulation-resistance tests for one minute on each pole, phase to phase, and phase to ground with switch closed and
across each open pole.
Verify heater operation if applicable.
