DRUG EDUCATION

Rationale:
The word wonder drugs is the marvel of modern drugs that cures or treat epidemic diseases like smallpox and polio. Drugs, when used properly with doctors prescription, can work wonders to our health and ailment. A drug in modern world keeps people alive and gives them a longer life provided it is taken legally. But, when drug is abused, that is when our health and well-beings are in trouble. Drug is the venue of some people to accumulate wealth and/or have vested interest to occupy a higher position in government to safeguard his/ her business by way of drug trafficking.

Definition and Terms:


Addiction- a state of periodic or chronic intoxication produced by the repeated consumption of regulated drugs. Dependence- continuous or periodic use of drugs, which results from psychological or physical need or both. Depressant- a chemical agent that diminishes the activity of the bodily function. Tolerance- increasing the intake of dosage of drug. Habituation- a condition resulting from repeated consumption of a drug. Hallucination- experiences of sensations with no external cause, usually arising from disorder of the nervous system or from drug abuse. Psychoactive- any drug that produces a change in a persons mood, thoughts, emotion or behavior that would lead to either suicide or criminality.

What is Drug and Drug Abuse?


Drugs -is any chemical substance that alters either the mind or the body. Drug Abuse -the overuse of beneficial drugs and the misuse of potentially dangerous drugs.

It can relieve pain. Control blood pressure Relieve anxiety Put you to sleep Increase your appetite

Patterns of Drug Abuse


1. Experimental users -the users are curious about the drugs effects rather than the drugs danger. They wanted to try just once; however, the infrequent misuse of drug may often lead to try recreational use. 2. Occasional users -the users feel that they are more sociable and more acceptable to their peers. They dont realize that their occasional use may form into habit. 3. Regular users -they regularly use drugs to maintain the drugged feeling, after which they become psychological dependents. 4. Dependent users -users rely on drugs physically and psychologically resulting from severely stressed mind and body.

Why do people abuse drugs?


To relax To escape reality To have fun To be more alert To imitate others To forget problems To satisfy curiosity To relive boredom To show of ability To cope up with stress To hurt self of others To be accepted socially To express dissatisfaction To ease pressure from friends To believe oneself

Common signs of drug abuse:


1. Poor physical appearance. 2. Wears shades or sunglasses during night time. 3. Performance in school or office is affected. 4. Work efficiency and punctuality have changed. 5. Changes in mood depending on drugs used. 6. Association with drug users. 7. Stealing of time for cash. 8. Wears long sleeves shirts.

Prevention of Drug abuse:


Use drugs with physicians prescriptions. Consult professional for help when coping with personal problem is impossible. Seek parents advise and not only with those from friends. Select friends who are thinkers of their future. Make a personal decision to maintain a good health Learn to relate and reflect yourself without using drugs. Build a strong foundation and faith with God. Respect yourself and accept who you are and your family status in life.

Prevention and control


Drug Prevention seems like a phrase only a school-kid might hear. However, drug prevention applies to everyone. People of all ages -- children, teens, adults and older people -- are all at risk for becoming addicted to one or more substances, whether cocaine or alcohol, heroin or prescription drugs. The prevention of drug abuse aims to change personal, social or environmental factors in order to assist delaying or avoiding the onset of drug use and its progression to harmful or problematic abuse. It is undertaking an action that makes drug abuse less likely in helping to promote health and well-being.
