1 Scope
This standard defines tests, requirements and designation of lamellar zinc coating (or zinc flake
coating) in accordance with 0204Y81063 standard “Coatings against corrosion – General
requirements”.

2 Application
The lamellar zinc coating is applied to increase corrosion resistance of steel and cast iron
components.

The lamellar zinc coating is particularly designed and recommended for protection of steel parts with
high mechanical strength such as spring, class 10.9 screws or hardened parts with tensile strength
≥ 1000 MPa (Hardness ≥ 31 HRc).
For such parts surface preparation must also not induce any hydrogenation of the part (see §3.1

Any origin identification mark present on this drawing is replaced by the one referred to under the norm 0204L61114
requirement).

Zinc flake coating with Cr VI (hexavalent chromium) are not authorized.

3 Coating process

3.1 Surface preparation

Integrity of the coating depends upon the quality of the initial surface. The initial component surface
must be good to permit to fulfill the requirements of this standard.

For parts with tensile strength < 1000 MPa (Hardness < 31 HRC) the preparation could be
mechanical and/or chemical processes.

For parts with tensile strength ≥ 1000 MPa (Hardness ≥ 31 HRc) the surface preparation must be
alkaline washing and/or mechanical process to avoid any Hydrogen embrittlement risk.
If the alkaline cleaner is electrolytic, the parts must be anodic. Cathodic electro cleaning and acid
pickling or phosphatising step is not permitted.

3.2 Coating application

The different coating application techniques (Dip-spin, rack or spray) are covered by this standard.
Coating is applied from a solvent or water base mixture containing of zinc flakes, aluminum flakes,
binder and eventually others as PTFE.
Application is completed after a final curing. Curing temperatures are generally between
180°C and 310°C depending on the product used.
According to the corrosion level requirement a multi coating step process can be performed by
supplier.

Natural color: silver.

3.3 Additional finish product

Additional finish product for specific part requirement as color or friction properties can be used. In
that case corrosion requirements of this standard must be preserved.

4 Requirements

4.1 Appearance
Coating shall be uniformly silver grey in color.

4.2 Coating types, thickness and corrosion test

4.2.1 Coating types

Any origin identification mark present on this drawing is replaced by the one referred to under the norm 0204L61114
Lamellar zinc coatings are distinguished in two types by thickness and corrosion resistance.

Symbol of Salt spray duration

coating Thickness
without red rust
Zn 5 ≥ 5 µm 480 h
Zn 12 ≥ 10 µm 720 h

4.2.2 Salt spray test

Neutral salt spray test according to ISO 9227

.
Salt spray test requirements must be fulfilled:
• As received condition
• After a 1 hour period of ageing at temperature 120 (0/+5) °C prior to the salt spray test (place
the component for 1h at 120 (0/+5)°C then let it cool down to ambient temperature)

4.2.3 Thickness

Thickness measurement according one of the two following methods:

• Micrographic cut according to ISO 1463
• Magnetic measurement according to ISO 2178

Note: when necessary, specific thicknesses must be defined within technical documentation of
component.

4.3 Adhesion properties

Coating shall have good adhesion to the basis metal and withstand handling operation without
exhibiting loss of adhesion.
An adhesion test according EN 13858 has to be made following this description:
• Press an adhesive tape with adhesion to steel of at least 3,5 N/cm.
• Apply uniform force to the entire area.
• Jerk strongly in perpendicular direction of the coated surface.
Result: Coating must not be tearing away from the base metal.

In case of component without flat surface > 30 mm² adhesion test has not to be performed.

5 Designation of coating
The designation contains:

Any origin identification mark present on this drawing is replaced by the one referred to under the norm 0204L61114
• Symbol of coating: Zn 5 or Zn 12
• Product code: when the product must ensure a specific function, a product code must be
defined according appendix A (e.g.: product code H containing PTFE load might be required in
the case where a specific friction coefficient is required).
• Additional finish: when there is a need for an additional finish for color or friction properties,
additional finish number must be defined according appendix A.

Examples of designation:
• Zn 5
• Zn 5 product code F – Additional finish 1.
