Dye Penetrant Procedure

The liquid penetrant examination method is an effective means for detecting discontinuities
which are open to the surface of nonporous metals and other materials. Typical
discontinuities detectable by this method are cracks, seams, laps, cold shuts, laminations,
and porosity.

In principle, a liquid penetrant is applied to the surface to be examined and allowed to

enter discontinuities.

All excess penetrant is then removed, the part is dried, and a developer is applied. The
developer function both as a blotter to absorb penetrant that has been trapped in
discontinuities, and as a contrasting background to enhance the visibility of penetrant
indications.

The dyes in penetrants are either color contrast (visible under white light) or fluorescent
(visible under ultraviolet light).

 VISIBLE LIGHT INTENSITY

Visible penetrant indications can be observed in natural or artificial visible light. A

minimum light intensity of 1000 lux is recommended. Light intensity, natural or
supplemental shall be measured by a suitable light meter prior to evaluation of indication.
A verified light source is permitted. The light source, technique & light level verification is
required to be demonstrated on time & documented.

 PERSONNEL QUALIFICATION

Personnel who interpret, evaluate & repot test result shall be minimum NDT Level II in PT

 TECHNIQUE
Solvent Removable

 PROCEDURE
 Clean part
The surface need to be free of dirt, rust, scale .paint, oil, and grease, and be smooth enough
to wipe off the penetrant without leaving residue.
This can range from grinding and wire brushing to merely wiping the part with a rag
moistened with the cleaner/remover.

 Apply penetrant
This is generally done by spraying/polishing penetrant from the aerosol/Can or applying it
with a brush. A dwell time needs to be observed to allow for the penetrant to permeate into
cracks and voids. This is typically 10 to 30 minutes but should never be long enough for the
penetrant to dry.

 Remove penetrant
All penetrant should be removed with clean, dry, lint-free rags until thoroughly clean. The
part or material should be rubbed vigorously until the penetrant is not visible on the dry
rags. Next cleaner should be sprayed on another clean, dry, lint-free rag and used to
vigorously rub the part again until there is no penetrant visible on the rag.

 Apply developer
A thin, light coating of developer should be sprayed on the part being examined. A dwell
time needs to be observed to allow time for the dye to exit the flaws and create an
indication (flaw) in the developer the dwell time for developer is typically 10 to 60 minutes

 ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA
It shall be responsibility of the NDT PT Level II technician to evaluate and report each weld
within the limit of acceptance criteria as per applicable construction code.
All indication shall be classed as non-relevant, acceptable, or unacceptable. Localized
surface imperfections, such as may occur from machining marks, or surface conditions such
as pressure joints may produce similar indications to those specified in the acceptance
criteria.
Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be retested to verify if actual relevant
discontinuities are present .Supplementary lighting shall be used where necessary to give a
minimum white light intensity of 1000 lux (100-foot candles) at surface in area of interest.
