How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:
☒ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.
☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)
This lesson is designed to take place after students have learned about the basic needs of plants and
animals. To begin, students will first listen to the podcast I created, which introduces the topic to the
students (basic needs of plants and animals). With this, I will explain to students what a podcast is. I
will then introduce the learning goal for the lesson. After students have learned about the basic
needs of plants and animals, I will introduce them to the activity: create a podcast episode
explaining how to take care of a specific plant or animal (i.e. apple tree or cat). For this activity,
students will choose their topic (the plant and animal they want to discuss in their podcast) based on
a list given by the teacher, research it, and then create a podcast episode where they will explain
how to take care of the plant or animal they chose. If students choose an animal, they must include
in their podcast that they need air, water, food, and shelter; if students choose a plant, they must
include in their podcast that they need air, water, light, and nutrients. Students may work
independently or in pairs for this activity. Once students have completed their research, they will
create a basic script for their podcast (I will explain prior to this what a script is and how to write a
script for a podcast.). I will check over students’ scripts and provide verbal and written feedback as
needed before moving on to the next step (creating the podcast episode). Once students have
completed their scripts, I will show students how to create a podcast. To conclude the lesson,
students will share with the class their podcast episode in which they have explained how to take
care of their plant or animal. I will then provide written feedback to students based on their podcast
episode.
Managing student learning:
This tool will help students shift from passive to active social learners, as students will be creating
their own podcast episode based on the information they obtained through conducting research . Once
students have learned the information for the lesson (basic needs of plants and animals), they will
be given time-on-task to first research their topic and then create a podcast episode. Students will
first decide to work individually in pairs. Then, students will have a few minutes to choose a plant or
animal based off of a given list (each individual/pair must choose a different plant/animal from the
list for their podcast episode). Students will be given 10-15 minutes to research their topic. Then,
students will have 15-20 minutes to create a script for their podcast. Students must have their script
checked by the teacher before they begin creating their podcast episode. Time frames may change
depending on the needs of students. Students may also take short brain breaks throughout this
process as needed.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection: Be sure to mention one specific UDL principle you
are focused on in this lesson – Multiple Means of Engagement, Multiple Means of Representation,
or Multiple Means of Action & Expression.
The use of the tool Spotify for Podcasters as part of the activity in this lesson enhances students
learning of plants and animals’ basic needs, helping to support the action and expression component
of the UDL framework. This activity provides students with the option of using a podcast audio
recording as a form of media for communication. Instead of just writing about the basic needs of
plants and animals, students are conducting research and creating an audio-recorded podcast
episode communicating what they discovered in their research about the basic needs of their plant
or animal.
Reflection:
The activity I created will teach students how to create a podcast episode as a way to show their
learning. For this lesson, I look forward to each of the students sharing their podcast episode with
the class because I believe it will be a fun way for students to share their learning with their peers. I
also think it will be fun to hear about each plant/animal that students choose and how each should
be cared for based on the research the students conducted.
