Ce 323: Reinforced Concrete Design: Midterm Exam

This document provides instructions for three situations to solve as part of a reinforced concrete design midterm exam. Situation 1 involves calculating properties of a beam reinforced with bottom bars and subjected to uniform and point loads. Situation 2 involves determining compression block properties and moment capacity for a beam with given reinforcement. Situation 3 asks to calculate the required tension steel area for a beam designed to resist a given moment.

CE 323: REINFORCED CONCRETE DESIGN

MIDTERM EXAM

PART II. INVESTIGATE OR DESIGN THE FOLLOWING SITUATIONS. Show your solutions on a long sized bond
paper.

SITUATION 1: (use WSD) Given a beam with section shown is reinforced

with 5-25mmØ at the bottom and has a simple span of 7m carries a
uniform load of 12KN/m and a concentrated load of 20KN at the
midspan. Concrete weighs 24 KN/m3. use f’c = 28 MPa fy = 278 MPa
use fc = 0.45f’c.
1. Determine the distance from the neutral axis to the outer compression
fiber.
2. Determine the transformed moment of inertia at the neutral axis.
3. Determine the actual maximum moment experienced by the beam structure.
4. Determine the allowable moment or moment capacity of the beam section.
5. Determine the adequacy of the beam structure.
6. Describe the mode of design of the given structure.

SITUATION 2: (use USD) A reinforced concrete beam 300mm x 500mm with reinforcement at tension side of 4 -
30mmØ, and reinforcement at compression side of 2 - 25mmØ. The beam is simply supported over a span of
7m. Using steel covering of 70mm, f’c = 21 MPa and fy = 276 MPa. Concrete density = 23.6 KN/m3
,superimposed deadload = 8 KN/m, wLL = 12 KN/m.
7. Determine the actual depth of the rectangular compression block.
8. Determine the distance from the neutral axis to the outer compression fiber.
9. Determine the Ultimate Moment Capacity of the Beam section.

SITUATION 3: (use USD) A rectangular beam has b = 300 mm and d = 480 mm. The beam is used to carry a
factored moment of 20 KN-m. Assume f’c = 27.6 MPa and fy = 276 MPa. Calculate the required tension steel
area.
