CHAPTER 1

Factors that Affect Reading Comprehension of Grade 12 Students of Bilad High School

INTRODUCTION

Reading is one of the most essential skills and starting point of the individual to learn everything

around her/him these skills empower learners to understand text, images and their message to

deepen their new learning. This is condamentally important to attain and achieve learning in

school and through life. Based on some previous studies above, the students are always having

their own problems while doing English comprehension. The problems and ability from one to

other students are different, because of that the writer is going to conduct a a study related to the

similar topic. Grade 12 students' ability in doing English Reading Comprehension test. The focus

of this research is to find the factors which makes gap between the higher and lower rank in

reading comprehension test level in Grade 12 students of Bilad High school study group at

advances reading comprehensions.

Reading has been always powerful ability to boost one’s mind. It involves working with physical

and mental aspect which it requires eyes to see the words and mind to access what everyone

means. If you have comprehension skills, you are able to understand the text you are reading it is

very important for the readers to develop these skills because without it, how would the reader

absorb every knowledge.


STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

What are factors that affect students reading comprehension ability?

What are factors that make the gap between students with good reading comprehension and

students with bad reading comprehension?

How to improve the reading comprehension of Grade 12 students?

HYPOTHESIS
A review of literature shows that student who use reading comprehension skills. Studies have

also shown that students who have strong reading comprehension skills score higher on

comprehension test. Therefore, the research hypothesis for study is that students who use reading

comprehension strategies score higher on reading comprehension test.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The main objective of this study is to determine the factors that affects reading comprehension of

grade 12 students. This study is limited to the 200 grade 12 male and female enrolled in the first

semester school year 2022-2023 at Bilad High School, Bilad Camiling, Tarlac. The 200

respondents are from the Bilad Senior High School. Each of the respondents is given survey

questionnaire to answer. The students came from six different section to prevent subjective

perception.

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Sheila Mae R. Primero was born on July 27, 2005 at Pindangan 1st Camiling, Tarlac. She is the

fourth child among five children of Mr. Salvador Primero and Mrs. Violeta Primero. She attained

her kindergarten years at Child Care Center. She then took her elementary years at Pindangan 1st

Elementary School. She is now pursuing her high school years at Bilad High School.
While she was Grade 11, she was joined to be a table tennis player and she received award as

bronze medalist.

Discussion:

The researcher believes that these factors will be helpful in this study. This will be used as the

basis for identifying the factors affecting the reading comprehension of the Grade 12 students.

The first frame is the factors affecting the reading comprehension of Grade 12 students. The

second frame contains the process which is the demographic profile; age, gender, section /

strand.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

1. To the students, this research reminds them to continue their study and how cope up their

effect of reading comprehension on academic performance and to have a better future and

to find a job someday.

2. To the teachers, this will serve as a reminder to support and guide their students to

encourage them to know the effect of reading comprehension on the academic

performance.
3. To the parents, the information presented in the study will be to the parents of the student

that may be aware and may give a proper support or guide to their children.

4. To the bilad administrator, the study will be helpful to the administrator for they can be

aware to the issue regarding the reading comprehension so that they can prepare an action

that can be help to the student's education. And also, it can conduct a seminar meeting

which the parents are focused, it can tackle about their involvement of their children to

their education.

5. To the future researcher, the future researcher would be able to this study as a reference

to their related research. They can use it to the study as a continuation of their research.

Absorb – to take in without echo, recoil, or reflection.

Achieve – to successfully finish or do something you wanted to do.

Attain – to achieve something difficult to do or obtain.

Boost – to push or shove up from below.

Deepen – to become more strongly felt or experienced.

Develop – to grow or change into a more advanced, larger or stronger form

Reading – the process of looking at a series of written symbols and getting meaning from them.
Understand – perceive the intended meaning of words, a language or a speaker.
