CHAPTER I
Background of the study
There are studies stated that we should study tardiness to know what causes and how
to avoid this problem especially to students, this kind of problem affetcs their concentration to
their academic performance in school and it makes students in getting lazy in school, according
to Beltran, D.J (2016).
Tardiness has already become a habit of some students nowadays, being tardy means
coming late on school even their house same just beside the school and it can lead to more
serious problems affecting their academic learning as well as their performance, if a student
does not on time everyday, they cannot perform well in class discussions, during submission of
outputs after deadline is also an example of being tardy.
There are many problems can affect the academic performance of the students. One of these is
tardiness. It can widely affect the academic performance of the students because of missed
classes or instructional hours of learning. It may cause failed accomplishments in homework,
written exams, and projects. Because of tardiness, students fail to pass their homework on time,
while others depend on their classmates by copying their work, Tardiness also affects the
students capacity to do their projects and pass it on time or before the deadline, and written
exams due to tardiness in the class, the student’s capacity to take notes on the lectures resulted
in the lack of notes to review for examinations, causing them to depend on their classmates . It
may become a habit of some students that may lead them to more serious problems like the
poor learning process, according to Willo,A.(2019).
There were four identified factors causing tardiness. First is anxiety and depression, because
students with anxiety are at risk of suffering from poor academic performance and resistance to
anything related to school. These may include a lack of engagement in the classroom, poor
relationships with peers and teachers, and apathy in pursuing passions and planning for the
future. Their learning is also affected due to the fact that anxiety and depression can affect
working memory, making it difficult to retain new information and recall previously learned
information. Anxiety and depression negatively influence academic progress and cause a
student to become tired due to a loss of interest in school.
Second is addiction to online games, because students spend too much time in online games.
Improper use of online games leads to problems like distraction and addiction. Addiction to
internet games is characterized by cognitive and emotional deficits. Online addiction involves
playing games uncontrollably for hours on end. Students use online games to relieve their
stress but excessive use of online games can lead to worsening learning ability, concentration
problems, poor academic performance, rejection in interacting with other people and the
tiredness of going to school that causes a student to be late. A common side effect of online
gaming addiction is withdrawal from social interactions. Instead of connecting with family or
friends, students prefer to stay at home or in internet cafes. The effect of this isolation will lead
to a breakdown in engagement and communication. True, they can interact with fellow online
games, but real social life and personal relationships suffer. When students stop social work,
they also stop being productive. They are so sleep deprived due to extended play time that they
are unable to complete school or home tasks which lowers productivity. Because of this, their
academic performance is poor. Addiction to online games harms the health of students because
they spend a lot of time without eating and don't even stop to do basic hygiene tasks like going
to the bathroom or taking a shower.
The third thing that can affect the academic performance of the student is family problems,
because the family problem on the other hand, affects the emotional level of the student. This
affects their focus in class. Wrong family culture causes bad attitude and behavior in students.
Family problems are inevitable and have a significant impact on students' academic
performance,according to Brian,L.S.(2019).
And the last, householde chores because household chores may negatively affect development
2
because, in addition to having little time for leisure, adolescents who perform household chores
have their school performance affected, more frequently miss classes, and experience school
failures, and have less time to do schoolwork.
The purpose of this study is how can we solve this problem, which is being tardy or coming late
of students in Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students. So we will be conducting this reseacrh to
make them aware because it causes them to get low grades because of being late and because
of missed classes which causes the students to not attend the discussion in the first subject
because of being late. It may become a more serious problem because they don’t learn
anything due to being late in classand this is also the reason for getting low grades and so on.
We choose the title The Effects of Tardiness to the Academic Performance of the Grade 12 Food
Processing 2/Tailoring Students S/Y 2022-2023, to find out the cause and effect of students
being tardy in Food Processing /Tailoring Students and to solve this because it affects the
tardiness of students in their homework, project, and written exam which causes low grades of
students.
Generally, the main focus of the study is to determine The Effects of Tardiness to
the Academic Performance of the Grade 12 Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students of Calabanga
National Science High School S/Y 2022-2023.
3
Significance of the study
The result and findings of this study about the tardiness in relation to academic performance
of the Grade 12 TVL Food processing\Tailoring student of Calabanga National Science High
School will both benefit to the students, teacher and also to the other researcher.
For students to be be aware of the effect of being tardy especially in school so that the
next time that they will do it, they will think twice because they have an idea how on what will
happen to them if they continue being tardy in school.
And for teachers to be aware on those students who are always coming late or now on
time in school and they can advice their students on what are they going to do to avoid being
tardy in school.
Definition of terms
Tardiness, –The act of students frequently tardy have lower and grade point
averages, manifested by the Grade 12 Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students.
Academic performance – is extent to which a students, teacher, or institution has attained their
short or long-term educational goals and measured either by continuous assessment or
cumulatine grade point average rates by the Grade 12 Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students.
Academic – is used to describe things that relate to the work done in schools, colleges, and
universities, especially work which involves studying and reasoning rather than practical or
technical skills. Their academic standards are high.
First Quarter Average – The First Quarter Average of our respondents unposed of written,
performance task and quarterly exam.
4
Grade 12 Food Processing 2 / Tailoring Students – The respondents of this stduy who will
answer the questions we have prepared in our survey ( Grade 12 Food Processing 2 / Tailoring
Students ).
The main focus of study is to determine the effect of tardiness to the academic performance of
Calabanga National Science High School S/Y 2022-2023. We will find out the reasons why the
student is late or tardy in the said school of grade 12 Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students. The
method we will employ descriptive and non-exeperimental research design. This research will
gather the profile of respondents in terms of age, gender, first quarter average and if how much
is their total attendance per quarter, and how a students tardiness affects their academic
performance, so they can be aware because being tardy affects their grades.

CHAPTER II
This chapter presents the related literature and studies reviewed to gather insights and serve as
guide in the analysis and interpretation which readings have relationships to the present study.
Effect of Tardiness to the Academic Performance of Grade 12 ABM Students in Bestlink College of
the Philippines School Year 2018-2019.
Based on the article by willo,A. (2019),et-al. The academic performance of the students can be
impacted by numerous issues. One of them is being late. The students' academic performance may be
significantly impacted by missed classes or learning hours. It might result in failed projects, written
exams, and homework assignments. Some children might develop the habit, which could cause more
serious issues like poor learning processes.
According to Gottfried, M. A. (2014),The deleterious effects of missing in-school time, research has
almost exclusively focused on absences, and almost no attention has been paid to tardiness. Hence, this
study contributes a new dimension to the field by examining the effects of student tardiness on
academic achievement. Employing an empirical model on a large-scale, longitudinal, multilevel dataset
of urban elementary school children over 6 years of observations, there are 2 significant findings. First,
students with greater tardiness perform worse on both standardized reading and math tests. Second,
holding constant an individual's own record of tardiness, students whose classmates are tardy more
frequently also have lower test scores. Hence, the achievement gap widens for students in classrooms
whose peers have higher rates of tardiness and widens even further for students who also have greater
individual levels of tardiness. Policy implications are discussed.
The Use of “Quiz Mania” in the Reduction of Tardiness Among College Students.
Class tardiness is defined as students not attending lecture on time and not being present in the time
set. Tardiness in PUP Lopez is rampant among students attending first period or early morning classes.
Thus, the study aimed to determine the reasons for student’s tardiness. It also aimed to lessen the
tardiness among students through the use of “Quiz Mania” where quizzes were given to students having
a 7:30 am classes. It is an action research which employed both descriptive and experimental research
design. For the descriptive part, survey questionnaire was used which focused on the root cause of their
tardiness in school. While, experimental part focused on the use of Quiz Mania. For the root cause of
tardiness, students become late because of the distance of the school from their house, they are doing
other work and because of not being interested with the lesson. But, usually, in order to avoid that,
teachers get the attendance on the start of their class. The results also revealed that the use of “Quiz
Mania” significantly reduced tardiness (p < .05) in students attending the early morning classes. Thus,
could be an effective tool to lessen or completely eliminate tardiness in the campus, according to
Zurbano, L. Y. (2021).
The Role of Personality and Agencies of Socialization in Tardiness, Absenteeism and Academic
Performance.
The study examines the role of personality and agencies of socialization in tardiness, absenteeism and
academic performance. A total of 221 students served as respondents of the study. Results show that
significant relationships were found among peers and family concerning punctuality and attendance in
school of the respondents who were taking Hotel and Restaurant Management (HRM) course.
Personality type particularly the introvert type is significantly correlated with tardiness among the
respondents who were taking Nursing. No significant difference was found between academic
performance and severity of tardiness among the respondents. Nevertheless, a significant difference
was found between academic performance and severity of absences for the respondents who were
taking Psychology, Business Administration, Education, Information Technology, and Theology,
according to Arbiol, J. M., & Billiones, H. S. (2013).
SYNTHESIS
It is well established that tardiness can have negative effects on academic performance.
Research has shown that students who are frequently late to class may miss important
instruction and information, which can make it difficult for them to keep up with their
coursework and potentially lead to lower grades. Tardiness can also disrupt the flow of a class
and distract other students, which can negatively impact the learning environment for
everyone.
There are a number of factors that can contribute to tardiness, including lack of
motivation, difficulty with time management, and external factors such as transportation
issues. It can be helpful for students to identify the causes of their tardiness and work on
addressing
them in order to improve their attendance and academic performance. There are also a
number of strategies that teachers and schools can use to reduce tardiness and improve
attendance, such as setting clear expectations for punctuality, implementing rewards or
consequences for being on time or late, and providing support to students who are struggling
with punctuality.
The research by Abriol, J.M & Billiones,H.S.(2013), is discussing The Role of Personality
and Agencies of Socialization in Tardiness, Abesteeism and Academic Performance, while the
research we did is content of what is The Effect of Tardiness on the Academic Performance of
Students. And the study by Gottfried M.A (2014), The Achievement Effects of Tardiness:
Evidence in Urban Elementary School is only focused on absenteeism, and almost no attention
has been paid to tardiness. on the other hand our research is not only focused on one reason
for students being tardy, we know the reasons why students become tardy and how it affects
their academic performance. The study of the use "Quiz ,Mania " in the Reduction of Tardiness
Among College Students, by Zurbano, L.Y. (2021) is the content of class tardiness is defined as
students not being present in the time set, it also aimed to lessen the tardiness away students
through the use of "Quiz Mania" their quizzes will be given to students having a 7:30 am classes
to know the root cause of their tardiness, during our study we will find out the effect of
students being tardy through our prepared questioners on Food Processing 2/Tailoring
Students and how it can be solved, because it affects their grade and to make them aware. The
study by Willo, A. (2019). The Effect of Tardiness to the Academic Performance of Grade 12
ABM Students is almost the same as our research title but the difference is that we focus on
Tardiness to the Academic Performance of Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students, while they
focus on ABM students.

CHAPTER III
This chapter presents the theoretical framework and conceptual framework that contains
the objectives and how it will be processed and what the outcome will be.
Theoretical Framework
Theory by Theory by
Stacy Zeiger Montera
Students who are frequently tardy have There have been some theories that
lower GPAs, lower scores on standardized pointed out that tardiness is caused by
assessments, and lower graduation rates. the personality of a person. Santillano
Chronic tardiness in elementary and middle stated that psychological theorists
school is also linked to failure in high considered some “personality traits,
school. including low self-esteem and anxiety”
as triggering factors of tardiness.
Our theoretical framework contains theories about the Effects of Tardiness to the Academic
Performance, According to some theorists, the behavior could be conditioned upon stimuli prior
to or resulting from the behavior, while others may suggest that it is based upon a lack of sleep,
anxiety, low self-esteem or even depression.
Conceptual Framework
The content of our conceptual framework is our objectives that come from the statement of
the problem of Chapter 1, which contains questions that what is the profile of the students in
terms of: age, gender, first quarter average and Total of Attendance per Quarter and also What
are the factors for students tardiness and How can tardiness affect the students academic
performance. We will conduct this interview with Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students to find
out what are the causes and effects of tardiness on students and how the students can solve it
in Food Processing 2/Tailoring Students. To make them aware of tardiness because it has a big
impact on their academic performance and when they get low grades in the subject because of
being late or tardy when they enter school.
