III. DISCUSSION:

The start of the 20th century saw the rise of distinct musical styles that reflected a
move away from the conventions of earlier classical music. By the end of the Romantic
period, classical music had reached something of a turning point, with many conventions and
structures having essentially remained in place since the Baroque era of the 17th and 18th
Centuries.

1. IMPRESSIONISM
• Extensive use of different timbre and effects, vague melodies and innovative chords.

• Sublime moods and melody suggestions replaced highly expressive and program
music.

• The sounds of different chords overlapped Lightly with each other to produce.

• Lack of a tonic-dominant relationship.

2. EXPRESSIONISM

• It used atonality and the twelve-scale.

• Lacking stable and conventional harmonies.

• It served as a medium for expressing strong emotions such as anxiety and rage.

3. NEO – CLASSICISM

• It was a partial return to a Classical form of writing music with carefully modulated
dissonances.

• It also adopted a modern, freer use of the seven-tone diatonic scale.

• Combining tonal harmonies with slight dissonances.

4. AVANT - GARDE MUSIC

• The order of the note groups could be varied so that musical continuity could be
altered.

• Improvisation was necessity in this style.

• The unconventional methods of sound and form, as well as the absence of traditional
rules governing harmony, melody, and rhythm.

5. MODERN NATIONALISM

• A looser form of 20th century music development focused on nationalist composers

and musical innovators who sought to combine modern techniques with folk
materials.

6. ELECTRONIC MUSIC

• The capacity of electronic machine such as synthesizers, amplifiers, tape recorders

and loudspeakers to create different sounds was given importance by 20th century.

• The composer is able to experiment with different sounds that cannot be produced by
regular musical instruments such as the piano or the violin.

7. CHANCE MUSIC

• Piece always sounds different at every performance because of the random

production, including the use of ring modulators or natural elements that became a
part of the music.

• Most of the sounds EMANATE from the surroundings, both natural and man-made,
such as honking cars, rustling leaves, blowing wind, dropping water, or ringing
phone.

V. GENERALIZATION

20th-century classical music describes art music that was written nominally from 1901
to 2000, inclusive. Musical style diverged during the 20th century as it never had previously.
So, this century was without a dominant style. Modernism, impressionism, and post-
romanticism can all be traced to the decades before the turn of the 20th century but can be
included because they evolved beyond the musical boundaries of the 19th-century styles that
were part of the earlier common practice period. Neoclassicism and expressionism came
mostly after 1900.
Each musical styles of the 20th century have its distinct characteristics which make it
differ to other musical styles.
