special freezer chiller cabinets for frozen meat that help save time when defrosting. In contrast,
fridge freezers with less freezer space saw demand fall due to the need to store food for longer.
Competitive landscape
Despite the COVID-19 pandemic becoming more serious in 2021, with many areas of
consumer appliances in Vietnam being negatively affected, the market is still seen to have
strong potential. In line with this, 2021 saw important brand activities from both global and local
names. For example, Hisense officially entered Vietnam with products imported directly from its
factory in Thailand. Meanwhile, Dyson opened its first store at Crescent Mall Ho Chi Minh City
showcasing products including hair dryers/stylers, vacuum cleaners and air purifiers.
New brands such as Casper, Falcon, Mobell, Galanz, Beko offering low to mid-priced
products have been displayed more in electronics and appliance specialist retailers, with sales
boosted by various advertising programmes in rural areas where consumers are more price
sensitive. Local players have also started to produce major home appliances. For example,
Sunhouse launched its new line of air conditioners, while Vinsmart introduced its first range of
air purifiers.
Tapping into the surge in online sales seen since the outbreak of COVID-19, many brands
also cooperated with e-commerce sites to offer attractive promotional programmes. This was
especially noticeable when the demand for kitchen appliances started to increase, with more
frequent “brand days” seen with large discounts on products such as air-fryers, blenders, juice
extractors, bread makers.
Retailing developments
A numbers of electronics and appliance specialist retailers have reduced their business or
disappeared from the market in 2021 due to the impact of COVID-19. In Hanoi, Topcare closed
six stores, while the Viet Long chain officially shut down after 11 years. Other retailers such as
Pico, HC and MediaMart also struggled for sales. To generate extra income, some electronics
and appliance specialist retailers even started to sell necessities like rice, fruit and vegetables
during the pandemic.
In contrast, the biggest chain of electronics and appliance specialist retailers, Dienmayxanh,
saw this difficult situation as a great opportunity to expand its share of the market. Since May
2021, Dienmayxanh officially started a new programme collaborating with small traditional
electronics stores across all provinces especially in rural areas. Within the first month of
launching, it had acquired 1,600 collaborators – with a significant number of sales driven by
consumers who had never purchased from Dienmayxanh before.
After generating strong results through selling laptops and smartphones during 2020, in 2021
Digiworld (DGW) decided to start selling consumer appliances. Initially it is distributing some
major products from Xiaomi but it is aiming to continuously expand its offer and share within
consumer appliances over the next three years.

better prices to locals, while having more budget to improve their products and develop newer
technologies. As an example, Panasonic is moving production of its large capacity fridge
freezers and washing machines from Thailand to Vietnam, with the plan predicted to be
completed by the end of 2021. This should spell good news for local sales of consumer
appliances over the forecast period.
There is likely to be a change in advertising strategy over the forecast period with a greater
focus on online channels and e-commerce cooperation. Brands will likely shift their marketing
budget to social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok due to the
increasing penetration of these platforms not only in urban but also in rural areas. The
effectiveness of key opinion leaders (KOLs) will likely have less of an impact as these were
overused during 2020/2021, specifically in personal care appliances. Instead, consumers are
expected to value a product’s advertised benefits and storytelling advertising campaigns.
