THE TEACHER AND THE COMMUNITY, SCHOOL CULTURE AND ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the discussion the learners are expected to:

a Describe the core idea of structural functionalism.


b Determine manifest and latent functions and dysfunctions of social cultural
phenomena.
c Understand the role and importance of every individual in a society.

II. CONTENT

 Structural-Functional Theory

 The learners compare different social forms and social organization
according to their manifest and latent functions.

III. PROCEDURE

A. Preparation
 Prayer
 Greetings and Checking of Attendance
 Review of the previously discussed topic
 Motivation
 The teacher sings a song called "Dem Bones" with her students. After the
song, the teacher will ask the following:
-What are connected to the song?
- What do you expect if these bones are connected?
- Does malfunctioning of one bone affect the other bone?
B. Presentation

The teacher will introduce her topic; explain what it is about, and why it is
important for them to listen carefully.

C. DISCUSSION
 The teacher will introduce the proponent of structural-functional theory.
 The teacher compared the society to the human body and explains the
connection of the song that used in motivation and the lesson.
 The teacher ask “As an individual what are the day to day activities they do,
and why do we do the things we do?” At least 3 students shall provide their
opinion.
 The teacher will explain the functionalist theory in education.
 The teacher will explain that we do the things we do because of our society
that every one of us is interdependent with each other that we have different
functions.
 The teacher will further explain that we have different functions. The teacher
shall use concrete examples so that the students may understand the
complexity of sociology.
 The teacher will introduce 2 other person who associated with the
development of structural functionalism.
i. Emile Durkheim- where he believed that society is a complex system
of interrelated and interdependent parts that work together to maintain
stability and that society is held together by shared values, languages
and symbols.
ii. Robert Marton- where he pointed out that social process often has
many functions.
a. Manifest Function- are the consequences of social processes
that are sought or anticipated.
b. Latent Function- is the unsought consequences of social
process.
c. Dysfunction- social processes that have undesirable
consequences for the operation of society.
 The teacher will explain the four (4) purposes of schooling according to
functionalists.
i. Intellectual Purposes
ii. Political Purposes
iii. Economic Purposes
iv. Social Purposes
 Note that the teacher is explaining the said concepts; students shall be asked
pertinent questions. Opinions at least two students shall be asked every purposes.
 The teacher will ask if there are points for clarification if there is any.

D. Application

 The teacher will ask one representative to explain briefly the significance of
each person's role in society.

E. Evaluation
1. He pointed out that social processes often have many functions.
2. What are the social processes function mentioned earlier?
3. He compares the society to the human body with different but interrelated parts
performing different functions. He is also the proponent of the structural
functional theory.
4. Who believed that society is a complex system of interrelated and
interdependent parts to work together to maintain stability.
5. What are the 4 purposes of schooling according to the functionalists?

F. Assignment
Is the concept of structural functionalism applicable in the earlier times? Explain
 
 The remaining 5 minutes will be used in explaining the evaluation and
assignment.
 End the session with a simple prayer.
