❖ INTRODUCTION

October 22, 2022, I was fortunate enough to get grasp the time of my interview
attendee, Renz Henry Abagatnan, RN, 30 years old, male, one of my junior high school health
education teacher and also was our clinic nurse in Saint Candida School - Hijas de Jesus
school, now working. He formerly worked at Jesus M. Colmenares District Hospital, and
later employed the Rural Health Unit, in my hometown Estancia, located at the northern part
of Iloilo province. Though our interview is quick, it shows how realistic the condition of a
public health nurse here working in the philippines. Most nurses care for one patient at a
time, as public health nurses care for entire populations. By working with whole
communities, public health nurses are able to educate people about health issues, improve
community health and safety and increase access to care.

❖ How is PHN different from other fields of nursing practice?

“Phn is different to other nursing fields because its main focus is the promotion of
health and prevention of diseases among the community. You start from the very basic of
health.” he stated.
A community health nurse could still develop other sorts of roles while working in the
setting. It may not be evident because of its vast and intricate tasks. What is important is the
impact it produces in those individuals who needed the care of a community health nurse.
Several of us would like to be one ourselves or, if not, acknowledge the struggles and efforts
made by our own nurses in the community in addressing health-related issues.

❖ Site the challenges and the benefits experienced by a public health nurse.
“I think the very challenge of public health nurse is going to the houses in far flung
areas where you need to have full patience. For the benefits, you need only to work in day
time compared to other fields and the compensation comes from the national budget.” he
stated.
Filipino nurses' decision to migrate relates to a myriad of factors such as low incomes,
lack of benefits, lack of opportunities and professional growth, high patient-nurse ratios, and
poor enforcement of nursing laws. This will have negative consequences on the ability to
provide effective health care services for this country. This is further aggravated by a serious
shortage of healthcare workers, nurses in particular, as many nurses prefer to work in urban
areas where most healthcare facilities are located and the pay is considerably competitive.

❖ What is the impact of Covid 19 in their health care services.

“The impact of Covid 19 to health care services for me is positive. Because of this
pandemic, the focus to health has given attention. Also the salary of nurses are increased.”
Public Health Nurses in the Philippines have assumed numerous responsibilities
during the COVID-19 pandemic. Providing these frontline nurses with comprehensive
specialized education and training is crucial. They had positive attitudes and displayed
effective practices in relation to COVID-19, after having increase of salaries.
❖ Why did you choose to be a public health nurse?

“I choose PHN because I can travel a lot. Also I meet the people within the community.
I can say that it is less stressful in my perspective.”

Community health nurses start by building trust and relationships with individuals and
local leaders. They also develop a strong understanding of people’s backgrounds,
experiences, and the social factors that influence health, with the goal of practicing cultural
humility with empathetic care.

❖ What is the best experience you had as a public nurse?

“My best experience so far is I need to spend my night at an island. Because there is
only one trip per day, I am required to sleep in the island community. It is a new experience
for me while working”
The efficiency and quality of the healthcare system is in part dependent on work
satisfaction, satisfied healthcare workers contribute to better quality care and patient safety.
With the length of service, the nurses’ experienced that they felt more confident and
comfortable to handle the situation such as the aggression from relatives of the patients.
