Express Preferences: Ing Form of A Verb
Hello students!
There are many ways to talk about preferences in English.
You can use common phrases and expressions to express your preferences.
Let’s start!
Now you know that we can express our preferences using the verbs: love, like, hate,
enjoy, prefer or don’t like.
Look at the chart for first and second person: I, you, we, they.
We can use the verbs like, hate, enjoy, love, don’t like and prefer with a noun or with the –
ing form of a verb.
For example:
Verb plus noun: I like WhatsApp.
Verb plus –ING: People like chatting on WhatsApp.
Now, look at the chart for third person: he, she, it.
Remember: We add “s” to the verb of preference and the auxiliary doesn’t for the
negative form.
For example:
Verb plus noun: He likes Instagram.
Verb plus -ING: She likes looking at photos on Instagram.
QUESTIONS
Look at the chart:
In questions, we put the auxiliary verb "do" before the following subjects: they, we, you
and I. These are yes/no questions.
Remember: Yes or no questions are questions whose expected answer is either "yes" or
"no".
For example:
Do they like chatting on WhatsApp?
There are two possible answers: Yes, they do or No, they don’t.
Yes, she does. Yes, he does. Yes, it does. If the answer is affirmative
No, she doesn’t. No, he doesn’t. No, it doesn’t. If the answer is negative.
