Will – I think, I hope + will, I believe

We use “will” – probably, possibly, maybe, perhaps
I’m sure + will

Some people have been taught that “will” is ‘the future’ in English. This is not correct. Sometimes when we
talk about the future we cannot use ‘will’. Sometimes when we use ‘will’ we are not talking about the future.

We can use ‘will’ to talk about future events we believe to be certain.

 The sun will rise over there tomorrow morning.

 Next year, I’ll be 50.
 That plane will be late. It always is.
 There won’t be any snow. I’m certain. It’s too warm.

 I’ll probably come back later.

 He’ll possibly find out when he sees Jenny.
 Maybe it will be OK.
 Perhaps we’ll meet again some day.

 I think I’ll go to bed now.

 I think she’ll do well in the job.
 I hope you’ll enjoy your stay.
 I hope you won’t make too much noise.

We use ‘will’ at the moment we make a new decision or plan. The thought has just come into our head.
 Bye. I’ll phone you when I get there.
 I’ll answer that.
 I’ll go.
 I won’t tell him. I promise.

For plans : (be) going to – planlı

For the future you can see : (be) going to – kesin

For the future you can’t see : will – tahmini, sanırım

Going to or will
When we want to alk about future facts or things we believe to be true about the future, we use
‘will’.
 The president will serve for four years.
 The boss won’t be very happy.
 I’m sure you’ll like her.
 I’m certain he’ll do a good job.

If we are not so certain about the future, we use ‘will’ with expressions such as ‘probably’,
‘possibly’, ‘I think’, ‘I hope’.
 I hope you’ll visit me in my home one day.
 She’ll probably be a great success.
 I’ll possibly come but I may not get back in time.

 Look at the queue. We’re not going to get in for hours.
 The traffic is terrible. We’re going to miss our flight.
 Be carefull!. You’re going to spill your coffee.

FORM
Subject + the verb to be + going + the infinitive of the verb.

Ex; He isn’t going to stay at home this evening.
Interrogative;
The verb to be + The Subject + going + the infinitive of the verb.

PLANS - INTENTIONS
The going to future is used to talk about things we have already decided to do or have planned to do.
I’m going to visit my cousins at the weekend.
The present continuous is also possible to talk about our plans for the future, but when we use the
present continuous we clearly state that we have made the necessary arrangements for someting:
Ex: I’m meeting Paula at the cafe.(I have phoned her and arranged to meet her there)
Remember that the Simple Future tense is used to talk about intentions at the time of speaking:
Ex: Look at that beautiful dress!
But:
Mum I’ve seen a beautiful dress.I’m going to buy it.

PREDICTIONS
The going to future is often used to predict that something is going to happen because there is something
that makes us believe it.
Ex: That man is driving too fast. He’s going to have an accident. I feel terrible, I’m going to be sick.
REMEMBER that “was/were going to do something” is used to talk about something we intended to do but
didn’t do it:

Use the going to future + one of the verbs in the list to fill in the blanks in the sentences.

ekleriz.
We wtched Tv last night - dün gece Tv izledik
Sue helped his father yesterday. – Sue dün gece babasına yardım etti.

 Eğer bir fiil “-e” ile bitiyorsa, fiilin 2.hali yapılırken yalnızca “-d” eklenir.
Arrive- arrived, live – lived, like – liked, prove –proved

 Fiil “ sessiz+sesli+sessiz” harf düzeni içinde bitiyorsa, sondaki sessiz harf genelde tekrarlanır ve
“-ed” takısı eklenir.
Stop – stopped, tap - tapped, clap – clapped, commit – committed

ELEMENTARY A1
Study – studied, stay – stayed , cry – cried, play – played

 Simple Past Tense ile olumlu cümlelerde fiilin 2.hali kullanılır.

I studied math for two hours last night.
(Dün gece iki saat matematik çalıştım)

Kate played chess with her friends yesterday

(Kate dün arkadaşlarıyla satranç oynadı)

 Olumsuz cümlelerde didn’t (did not) ve fiilin yalın hali kullanılır.

I didn’t study English last night - Dün akşam İngilizce çalışmadım
Selen didn’t like the film. - Selen filmi beğenmedi

 Sorularda “did” yardımcı fiili başa getirlir ve özneden sonra fiilin yalın hali kullanılır.
Did you watch the match on Tv last night? – Dün gece Tv deki maçı seyrettinmi?
Did Ted help his father yesterday? - Ted dün babasına yardım etti mi?

 Bu zaman ile birlikte çok sık olarak aşağıdaki zaman zarfları kullanılır.

TELEVISION... Benefits and side effects...
A. Despite the proliferation of new technologies,
teenagers still spend a lot of time glued to the box.
Read these tenns opinions.

Steve, 13
I love TV. The first thing I do when I wake up is to switch it on.
My favourite channel is the Cartoon Network. I watch TV three to four hours a day. My parents think it is
too much and they are always telling me to do something else like studying, reading or doing a sport, but TV
is my favourite hobby and I don’t feel like doing anything else. Of course I know that my marks at school
would be better if I concentrated more on schoolwork and took more time to do my homework, but I guess
I’m addicted to my favourite programmes. Anyway, I have already promised my parents to watch less TV
every day. I guess I’ll have to go earlier to bed...

Kate, 14
I think TV has become a great source of information.
I know most teens don’t like watching the news, but I do. I like to know what is happening around our world.
I also enjoy documentaries, especially about wildlife. I’m very curious about the way animals live and what is
being done to preserve their species. I always have a lot of fun watching TV. Another great thing about TV
is that I can listen to my favourite music and watch the video clips at the same time. I also enjoy watching
live shows and films, mostly comedy and thrillers, though I also like watching dramas now and then. I watch
TV two to three hours a day.

Rachel, 17
I like TV as everybody else, but since I have done some research work for school I’ve become more
selective about the programmes I watch. I like watching the news and some game shows like “Who wants to
be a millionaire?”, so I don’t really spend too much time in front of the box, an hour or two a day... I’m more
aware now of the good and not so good effects of TV, Some programmes are educational and help us to
develop and use our imagination, but many are full of voilence. There are also so many soaps and reality
shows that make people forget that there is a real world out there to experience.

ELEMENTARY A1

A young prince lives with his father, the Caliph, in a large palace. The
young prince is very unhappy because his mother died.
After a few years, the Caliph marries again. The prince's step mother
is very unkind. The Caliph doesn't care much about the prince, wich
makes him unhappy. On the 15th of the month of Sha'aban, the son
says to his pet piegeon,"Let's not stay here anymore.Let's run away
because nobody here cares about us" So they both run away into the
jungle. The prince walks for a long while. Finally, he reaches a grand
palace wich belongs to a ghoul. The prince is tired and says to the pet
pigeon, "This is the ghouls's palace. We shouldn't stay here, but we
are so cold hungry and tired. We need a rest for a while. He might be
asleep. Let's sneak in and rest till the morning." But the ghoul isn't
asleep. He watches the prince walk into the palaca. The prince looks
around and sees a bed. He sleeps in the bed for the night. The
morning comes and the prince wakes up. He is surrounded by golden
bars. He is trapped and scared. He wishes her never left his home.
The ghoul says “I know all about your evil stepmother.
Your father doesn’t love you. I’m lonely, so I’ll keep you here as my pet.” The little prince pleads with
the ghoul to set him free. The ghoul growls at the prince, “ I will send your pigeon home with a
message. If the Caliph loves you and misses you, he will follow the pigeon back here and save you. If
not, you will stay here for the rest of your life. The pigeon files with the message to the Caliph’s
palace. After his son runs away, the Caliph cries and prays every night. He wishes he saw him before
the holy month of Ramadan. On the last night of Sha’aban, he feels that his son is close. He opens the
window and finds the pigeon sitting on the ledge. He knows that he has to follow the pigeon, but it is
really dark. The Caliph’s sister, a princess, hsd sn idea. She asks local people to help the Caliph. She
asks people to carry a lantern and walk with him to find the prince. News travels quickly. Soon every
man, woman and child carries a lantern and helps the Caliph. On their way, the children sing songs to
celebrate the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. The prince hears the songs and sees the light
from his prison window. He knows it is his father. The ghoul is surprised that the Caliph comes for the
prince. Ghoul feels sad. He says “I was wrong. Your father loves you. You are free. You may go.” The
young prince hugs his father. They return to their home and fast together to celebrate the first day of
Ramadan. The Caliph is so happy. First, he rewards the local people with gold lanterns to hang
outside their houses to remember the event. Then, he orders his ministers to light the streets and
mosques with colourful lanterns to add joy to the area. Since that day, young children buy colourful
lanterns to celebrate the first day of Ramadan.
