HOW TO USE THIS DIGITIZED LEARNING MODULE
Welcome to the module in What is Management?. This module contains training
materials and activities for you to complete this module.

You are required to go through a series of learning activities in order to complete


each learning outcome of the module. Each of the learning outcomes is provided with
Modules. Follow these activities on your own and answer the self-check at the end of
each learning outcome. You may remove a blank answer sheet at the end of each module
(or get the answer sheets from the online facilitator) to write the answers for each self-
check. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to ask your facilitator for assistance.

This module was prepared to help you gain fundamentals and basic knowledge
about Definition of Marketing. This will be the source of Information for you to acquire
knowledge and skill in this particular trade independently and at your own pace, with
minimum supervision of help from your instructor.

• Talk to your online facilitator and agree on how you will both organize the Training
of this unit. Read each through the module carefully. It is divided into sections,
which cover all the skills and knowledge you need to successfully complete this
module.
• Work through all the information and complete the activities in each section. Read
Modules and complete self-check. Suggested references are included to
supplement the materials provided in this module.
• Your online facilitator will tell you about the important things you need to consider
when you are completing activities and it is important that you listen and take
notes.
• You will be given plenty of opportunities to ask questions and practice on the job.
Make sure you practice new skills during regular work shifts. This way you will
improve both your speed and memory and also your confidence.
• Talk to more experienced workmates and ask for their guidance.
• Kindly the self-check questions at the LMS (EDMODO) to test your own progress.
• When you are ready, ask your online facilitator to watch you online via Zoom or
Google Meet to perform the activities outlined in this module.
• Ask your online facilitator work through the activities: ask for written feedback on
your progress. Your online facilitator keeps feedback/pre-assessment reports for
this reason. When you have successfully completed each element, ask the
facilitator to mark on the reports that you are ready for assessment.
• When you have completed this module, and feel confident that you have sufficient
practice, your online facilitator will arrange an appointment with registered
assessors to assess you. The results of your assessment will be recorded in your
competency Achievement Record.

MODULE 1
What is Management?

Learning Objective: After reading this MODULE, you should be able to:

1. Identify the meaning of Management.


2. Identify the purpose of Management.
3. Explain the importance of Management.

Business – a general term which includes all profit seeking activities of an enterprise
that ultimately provides goods and services that satisfies the human wants and needs.

The main reason for the business to operate is the profit or income received. The
philosophy of the business is the render of comfort in the form of products and
services to customers.

What is MANAGEMENT?

• Management - is the process of harmonizing and administration of people,


task and functions within an organization to work effectively and efficiently.

• Management - is a science as well as an art. It is a body of knowledge


whose ideas and principles have become the basis of organization frameworks
employed by many businesses and organizations. It is considered
a science because it evolved from a number of theories that involved
extensive studies and experiments. The management principles practiced
by business people and professionals are based on scientific principles,
scholarly studies, and statistical data. The problem-solving nature of
management benefits greatly from methods and practices adopted from
scientific principles.

• Management – is the process of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling


the activities of an organization effectively and efficiently.

Effective – meeting the desired result of an objective. It is the capacity to attain an
intended objective or result. "Doing the right thing"

Efficient – meeting the desired result within or less than the prescribed time and
resources. It is the ability to maximize output with minimum input. "Doing things
right". Avoid wasting time and effort

Example, A person finished the tasks within the day as instructed to him. If he has
done the task within the day or lesser then he is considered efficient. If he finished
the task more than a day, he is effective but not efficient. Time elements and
resources are mostly considered for efficiency.

It is believed that EFFECTIVE + EFFICIENCY = GOOD MANAGEMENT

Management Features:

1. Process – a systematic way of doing things

2. It utilizes the resources efficiently

3. Achieves stated goal

7 M’s of Management

1. Man – referred to as a human resource. It is the recruitment, selection, training,


promotion, and grievances handling of personnel.

2. Money - Money issue in management involves right from where an enterprise is


established and the owner brings money in the business. Various long-term and short-
term sources of finances are determined, Loans and advances are taken management
is done to meet day-to-day business requirements, and the funds involved in meeting
those requirements are known as working capital.

3. Machine - are the basic tools to produce goods or to generate services. The
selection of an appropriate machine not only enhances efficiency but also saves time
and increases revenue.

4. Materials - is a basic ingredient in management be it a service industry or a


product industry. Most of the industries locate themself nearby to the availability of
material.

5. Method - Everything has a right way to do and this right way is known as a method
in management. In short, it means an art of doing. It is a set of procedures and
instructions

6. Measurements – are quantified observations of some aspects or attributes of a


process, product, or project.

7. Marketing – is a process of allocating the resources of an organization toward


marketing activities.

Management Functions

Management functions are needed in order for the business or organization to


operate. Technically we have five basic management functions.

1. Planning – it involves the process of visualizing the goals the organization would
like to achieve. It starts with a Vision and is followed by a Mission.

2. Organizing – the process of sorting and assigning human and nonhuman


resources within an organization.

3. Staffing – the process of selecting and hiring people best suited to be part of an
organization. They are responsible for monitoring people, their functions, and their
contributions to the organization. They are also responsible for the growth of any
human concerns that affect the organization.

4. Leading – the process of motivating and guiding people within the organization.
It includes the process of making people work towards the goal of the organization.

5. Controlling- it involves evaluating the human and non-human resources if they


follow or meet the standards set during the planning function.

The five basic management functions will be the whole content or cycle of this subject.
