1.0 INTENT
This specification is intended to cover the design, manufacture, assembly, testing at
manufacturer's works, packing, supply, transportation, receipt, installation and
commissioning at site of medium voltage motors with all materials and accessories for
efficient and trouble-free operation.

2.0 CODES & STANDARDS


The squirrel cage induction motors and their components shall comply with the latest
applicable Indian standards listed below.
IS – 325 Specification - Three phase induction motors.
IS – 900 Code of practice for installation and maintenance of induction motors.
IS - 1231 Dimensions of three phase foot mounted induction motors.
IS – 1271 Thermal evaluation and classification of electrical insulation.
IS - 2148 Specification for Flameproof enclosures for electrical apparatus.

IS - 13529 Guide on effects of unbalanced voltages on the performance of three phase


cage induction motors.
IS - 13555 Guide for selection and application of three phase induction motors for different
types of driven equipment.
IS 14568 Dimension and output series for rotating electrical machines, frame numbers
355 to 1000 and flange numbers 1180 to 2360.
In case of imported equipment, standards of the country of origin shall be applicable if
these standards are equivalent or stringent than the applicable Indian standards.
The equipment shall also conform to the provisions of CEA Regulations 2010 and other
statutory regulations currently in force in the country.
In case Indian standards are not available for any equipment, standards issued by IEC/BS
/VDE/ IEEE/ NEMA or equivalent agency shall be applicable.

3.0 CERTIFICATION:
Approval certificate from statutory authority ie DGMS shall be submitted indicating
suitability of flameproof motors and accessories in hazardous area locations.

4.0 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS


4.1 Operating Conditions:
Motors shall be suitable for operating satisfactorily in humid and corrosive atmospheres
found in refineries and petrochemicals plants. Motors shall be rated for continuous
duty.

4.2 Frequency and voltage variations:


Motors shall be required for continuous, satisfactory operation at rated output under the
following conditions:
a) The terminal voltage differing from its rated value by not more than + 10%,
or
b) The frequency differing from its rated value by not more than +3%,
or
c) + 10%, (Any combination of (a) and (b))

4.3 Starting:
All motors rated below/ equal to 22 KW shall be designed for direct-on-line starting. Digital

Soft starters will be provided for motors exceeding 22 KW rating.


Starting torque shall be higher than torque of the driven load throughout the starting
period. All motors shall be suitable for starting under specified load conditions with 75
percent of the rated voltage at the terminals.

4.4 Insulation and bracing:


Motors shall be provided with class ‘F’ insulation. The permissible temperature rise
above the specified ambient temperature shall be limited to those specified in the
applicable IS standards for class “B” insulation. The windings shall be tropicalized.

4.5 Phase connections:


The windings shall be connected in delta. However, for motors rated 2.2 KW and below,
star connection is acceptable.

4.6 Winding terminations:


The ends of the windings shall be brought out into a terminal box. They shall be terminated
by means of terminals mounted on an insulating base made of non-hygroscopic and non-
flammable materials. All motors shall be with six terminals and suitable links to connect them
in star or delta except for motors rated up to and including 2.2 KW which may be
accepted with three terminals.

4.7 Terminal box and cable entries:


An adequately sized earth terminal shall be provided in the motor terminal box for
termination of the fourth core of specified cables.
Terminal box shall be mounted on right hand side as viewed from drive end suitable for
top/bottom/side entry of cables at site. The terminal box shall be provided with bolted
terminals, cable lugs and entries for suitable cable glands. Nickel plated brass, double
compression type cable glands, suitably sized for required cables shall be supplied. Cable
lugs shall be of tin plated copper only. Motor terminal box shall be suitable for fault level of
40KA for 0.25 sec for motors above 30 KW. The motor and terminal box shall be
provided with two earth terminals. Equipment and accessories shall conform to the
hazardous area classification and the environmental conditions as required.

4.8 Motor casing and type of enclosure:

Motors along with the terminal boxes shall meet the specified ambient conditions
and operating requirements. The minimum degree of protection for motor enclosures
including terminal boxes and bearing housing shall be IP-55.
Motor for outdoor use shall be suitable for installation and satisfactory operation
without any protective shelter or canopy. However all motors located outdoor shall be
provided with sheet steel canopies made of 14SWG MS sheet, epoxy painted.
Motors located in hazardous area shall have valid statutory approval certificate as
applicable for specified location from DGMS.
All internal and external metallic parts shall be of corrosion resistant material or
appropriately treated to resist corrosion. Fixing screws, nuts and bolts shall be hot dip
galvanized or zinc passivated.

4.9 Shaft extension:


Motors shall be provided with a single shaft extension with key-way and full key.

4.10 Anti-condensation heaters:


Motors above 30 KW shall be provided with 240 V anti-condensation heaters, sized
and located so as to prevent condensation of moisture during shutdown periods. The
heaters shall permanently remain ’ON’ when the motor is not in service and as such
shall not cause damage to the windings.
For motors installed in hazardous atmospheres (Zone-1 or Zone-2), such heaters shall
conform to the provisions of applicable Indian Standards and temperature classification.
A separate terminal box of the same specification and grade of protection as the main
power terminal box should be provided for termination of space-heater cables.
A warning label with indelible red inscription shall be provided on the motor to indicate that
the heater supply shall be isolated before carrying out any work on the motor.

4.11 Fixing Bolts:


All motors shall be supplied with fixing bolts. Motors shall be provided with eye-bolts to
facilitate safe lifting operation.

4.12 Bearings:
Antifriction type bearings shall be used. The motors shall be provided with bearings
guaranteed to ensure a life not shorter than 40,000 hours. Motors shall be provided with

on line grease lubrication arrangement for both drive end & non-drive end bearings
complete with grease nipple and drain plug.
Bearings shall be suitable for bi-directional rotation of the motors.
Vertical motors shall have thrust bearings suitable for the load imposed by the driven
machinery.

4.13 Vibrations:
Motor vibration shall be within the limit of IS-12075.

4.14 Noise level:


Permissible noise level shall not exceed the stipulations laid down in IS-12065.

4.15 Cooling:
Motors shall be totally enclosed fan cooled. Cooling fans shall be of copper free
aluminium suitable for bi-directional rotation of motors and to be provided with fan
guards.
For motors operating in hazardous area, the fans shall be of an anti-static non-sparking
material.

4.16 Lifting Hooks


All motors weighing more than 30 kg. shall be provided with lifting hooks of adequate
capacity.

4.17 Earth Terminals


Two earth terminals located preferably on diametrically opposite sides shall be provided
for each motor. The size of each earth stud shall be as given below in Table:

Necessary nuts and spring washers shall be provided for earth connection.
An additional earth terminal shall be provided inside the terminal box as stated in 4.7.

5.0 PERFORMANCE

Motors shall be rated for continuous duty (S1) unless specified otherwise.
Unless specified, the starting current (as % rated current) shall be limited to maximum 600-
700% (based on number of poles & KW rating) as per IS 12615 subject to tolerance as per IS
325.
Starting torque and minimum torque of the motor shall be compatible with the speed torque
curve of the driven equipment under specified starting and operating conditions. For heavy
duty drives such as blowers, crushers etc. high starting torque motors shall be provided. In
case where characteristics of driven equipment are not available while selecting the motor,
minimum starting torque shall be 110% of rated value for motors up to 75 kW and shall be
90% of rated value for motors above 75 kW.
The pull out torque at the rated voltage shall be not less than 175 percent of the rated load
torque with no negative tolerance. The pull out torque shall not exceed 300 percent of the
rated load torque.
All motors shall be suitable for starting under specified load conditions with 75 percent of
the rated voltage at the terminals. Performance characteristics shall be as per IS - 12615
for energy efficient motors. The minimum value of efficiency for the motors shall conform
to EFF - 1 level of IS - 12615.
Motors shall be suitable for 4 consecutive starts from ambient and 3 consecutive starts
from steady state full load temperature.
Minimum locked rotor thermal withstand time at rated voltage shall be 10 seconds
under cold conditions and 8 seconds under hot conditions. The starting time of the motor
shall be less than the hot thermal withstand time of the rotor by at least 2 seconds to permit
application of conventional bi-metal relays or thermal relays against locked rotor and
overload conditions.
Motors fed by variable frequency drive shall additionally meet the following requirements:
The motor shall be suitable for the current wave forms produced by the power supply
including harmonics generated by the drive.
The motor shall be designed to operate continuously at any speed over the range (1-100%)
of rated speed. The characteristics shall be based on the application- in terms of constant
torque/ variable torque as per the driven equipment.
The motor shall withstand torque pulsation resulting from harmonics generated by the solid
state power supply.
The motors required to be transferred to DOL bypass mode shall be rated for specified
variations in line voltage & frequency.

The minimum value of efficiency at rated output shall be as per IS 12615.


6.0 INSPECTION & TESTING
Inspection & testing shall be following the criteria mentioned under “Quality Assurance
Plan” specified in bid package.
Motors shall be tested in accordance with IS-12615, IS-325 and IS-4029. Copies of the
type test certificates shall be furnished for review. Routine tests shall be carried on all
motors. Additionally test to ascertain the efficiency at 75% of load and full load is to be
carried out for one sample from each KW rating and frame size.

7.0 DRAWGINGS AND DOCUMENTS


Contractor shall submit all necessary data / drawings / documents including but not limited to
the following, for approval / review by the company:
a) Completed motor data sheet.
b) GA, Dimension and mounting details.
c) Details of terminal box and auxiliaries.
d) Performance characteristics viz. Speed v/s current and speed v/s torque.
e) Thermal with stand curves under hot and cold conditions.
f) Type test and routine test certificates.
g) Approval Certificates issued by Statutory authorities for hazardous area motors
Purchaser’s approval of contractor drawings and certifying test results shall not relieve the
manufacturer of his responsibility for supplying equipment conforming to relevant
standards or for any mistake, omission or commission in manufacturer’s drawings.
Operation & instruction manuals along with documents as mentioned above are to be
handed over to purchaser at the time of handing over.
