1. Removal objectives of coagulation and flocculation
Coagulation
Aggregation of colloidal and fine suspended particles by dosing
coagulant into water, to form separable flocs that can be removed
in the subsequent process (e.g., sedimentation).
Removal objectives:
Colloids and some fine suspended particles
• Combined with solid-liquid separation processes
• Reagent: Coagulant
• Product: Flocs

2. Application in water and wastewater treatment
1) Water treatment

Water treatment process for surface water:

Raw water → Coagulation and flocculation → Sedimentation → Filtration
→ Disinfection → Potable water

• Remove the turbidity and bacteria

• after coagulation and flocculation: turbidity < 10 NTU

2) Wastewater treatment

Advanced treatment of domestic wastewater:

Secondary effluent → Coagulation and flocculation → Sedimentation → Filtration

Pretreatment of industrial wastewater

(Printing and dyeing wastewater, oily wastewater, etc.):
Raw wastewater → Coagulation and flocculation → Sedimentation/Air floatation
→ Biological treatment
