What are the significant contribution of the Spaniards and Americans to the
development of science and technology in the Philippines?
During the Spanish colonial period, science and technology developed through the
establishment of formal education institutions and the launching of scientific
organizations. They established schools for boys and girls and introduced the concept
of the subjects and disciplines. It was the beginning of formal science and technology in
the country, known as school of science and technology. The rapid development of
scientific principles influenced by Western culture during the Spanish colonial period
was short changed. The Filipinos developed ways to replicate the technology brought
by the Spaniards using indigenous materials.
The Americans have more influence in the development of science and technology in
the Philippines compares to the Spaniards. They established the public education
system, improved the engineering works and the health conditions of the people. They
established a modern research university, the University of the Philippines, and created
more public hospitals than the former colonial master. They reorganized the learning of
science and introduced it in public and private schools. The teaching of science in
higher education has also greatly improved and modernized. Researchers were done to
control malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis and other tropical diseases.
What are the state of science and technology during the Spanish and American
period?
In Spanish Colonial period, scientific institution was introduced aside of formal
education that brought sanitation and more advanced methods of agriculture in the
Philippine archipelago's natives for improvement. While in the American period, science
and technology was more modernized and prioritized than the Spanish period does as
primarily focused on research for the tropical diseases, agriculture, food processing,
forestry, medicine and pharmacy.
Look at your society, elaborate at least 10 technological devices and discuss its
purpose/usage.
1. Laptop - designed for portability and enable people to work on their projects from
virtually anywhere.
2. Smart phone - A smartphone is a mobile or cellular phone that runs off a mobile
operating system (OS) and functions like a mini computer.
3. Printers - A printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from a
computer and transfers the information to paper, usually to standard-size, 8.5" by
11" sheets of paper.
4. Camera - a device for recording visual images in the form of photographs, film, or
video signals
5. Washing Machine - Washing machine is the machine used to wash the various
types of clothes without applying any physical efforts.
6. Headphones - a pair of earphones joined by a band placed over the head, for
listening to audio signals such as music or speech.
7. Refrigerator - It keeps food and drinks cool, by pushing a liquid refrigerant
through a sealed system, which causes it to vaporize, and draw heat out of the
fridge.
8. Rice Cooker - an automated kitchen appliance designed to boil or steam rice.
9. Television - a system for transmitting visual images and sound that are
reproduced on screens, chiefly used to broadcast programs for entertainment,
information, and education.
10. Clothes Iron - A clothes iron is a small appliance that, when heated, is used to
press clothes to remove creases.
