Cell Division - Mitosis SNC2D1 / 23

Instruction:

1. This is a Hyperdoc - it is designed as a scavenger hunt for information

2. Work through each task and record all responses within the space provided.

BIG Ideas:

● Why does cell division happen?

● What are the stages of mitosis.

Video - Stages of Mitosis (Bozeman Science)

● Watch the video: Stages of Mitosis to learn about the
importance of cell division and the stages.
○ Click the picture (right) for video link.
○ Answer the following questions

1. During the cell cycle, what is happening during the 3 stages (G1, S, G2) of interphase?
[3m]

During the G1 interphase , the cell is growing and getting larger. In the S phase (synthesis
phase), it’s duplicating all of the DNA and in the G2 phase, the cell continues to grow.

2. Answer the following about the DNA within the cell: [3m]
○ One side of a chromosome is called?
One side of a chromosome is called Chromatid.

○ The middle of the chromosome is called?

The middle of the chromosome is called centromere/kinetochore.

○ What attaches to the kinetochore (also called centromere) on the chromosomes

during mitosis?

Microtubules attach to the kinetochore during mitosis.

3. Chromosomes have sister chromatids after what phase of mitosis is completed? [1m]

Chromosomes have sister chromatids after metaphase.

4. Describe the key events for what is happening in each of the following stages of mitosis:
[5m]
○ Prophase
● Chromosomes condense
● Mitotic spindle forms
○ Metaphase
● Metaphase plate
○ Anaphase
● Chromatids separate
○ Telophase
● Cell elongation, new nuclei forms on each side
● Cleavage furrow
● Daughter nuclei form
○ Cytokinesis
● Cell elongation, new nuclei forms on each side
● Cleavage furrow
● Daughter nuclei form

Purpose: To observe and identify cells in the different stages of the cell cycle.

Part A: Observing Actively Dividing cells

1. Go to the website: http://www.biology.arizona.edu/cell_bio/activities/cell_cycle/cell_cycle.html
2. Read the information provided on the website and fill out the following questions.
3. In this activity, you have been presented with cells from the tip of an anion root. You classify
each cell based on what phase it is in. At the end you will count up the cells found in each
phase and use those numbers to find the percentage of cells found in each phase. Tally
your results in Table 1.

Region where mitosis is most visible root cap

Observations:
Table1: Cells in various stages of the cell cycle [5m]
Interphase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase Total
Number of 20 10 3 2 1
cells 36

Percentag 28 8 6 3
e of cells 56 100%

Analysis:
1. Why are the cells above the root cap the best ones of observing mitosis? [1m]
-The cells above the root cap are the best one of observing mitosis because they
search for water and nutrients.

2. Based on your results [2m]

a. Which stage of the cell cycle is most common?
-Interphase

b. Given what you know about the cell cycle, give a reason for your answer in (a).
It is because the interphase has 20 cells, which is the most amount of cells, and the
Interphase is where the cell spends most of its life.

3. After the phases of mitosis, name and define the next part of the cell cycle [1m]

After the stage of mitosis, the next stage is Telophase. In this phase, the two daughter nuclei
form and a new nuclei is formed on each side of the cell. The chromosome also scatter onto
opposite sides of the cell.. It is the final stage of mitosis.

4. Why must a cell divide? Provide 2 reasons. [2m]

1.To replace old, broken cells with new ones.
2.So that living things can grow
