Experiment 3: Air Pollution Activity

Name:___Shaira R. Jolo_______________________Grade and Section: __11-Fermat_____________

Class Code:__G-08____Group Number:____C______ Date Conducted:____March 16,
2023__________

DATA TABLES
DIRECTIONS: Calculate the concentration of your baking soda solution in MOLAR (mol solute/L
solution). See the instructor’s notes for guidance.
Solution Concentration of Baking Soda (g/mL) Concentration of Baking Soda (mol/L)

1 3.845 x 10-7

2 7.69 x 10-7

3 1.1535 x 10-5

Show your calculations below (you may type it out or insert a picture):

GUIDE QUESTIONS
1. What is the pH of your breath based on the experiment? What component of your breath could be
responsible for this result?
○ The pH of the person’s breath based on the experiment was basic.
○ It can be pertained due to the change in the color of the purple solution from clear to less
clear up to slightly turbid.
2. What is the relationship between the concentration of baking soda and the time elapsed for color
to change in the solution in part 1?
○ The greater the concentration of baking soda, the faster the color will change.
3. What are the possible identities of the gases formed from the burning of incense? Determine
whether these gases are acidic or alkaline based on references. Is this information consistent with
what you have observed in the indicator solution?
○ The possible identities of the gases formed are Carbon Monoxide (CO), Carbon Dioxide
(CO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2). It is found that Carbon
Monoxide (CO) is neutral while Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Sulfur Dioxide (SO2), and
Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) are all acidic gases.

○ The information is consistent with what we had observed because after doing the
experiment, the solution turned from purple to a pink which means the solution is more
acidic.
4. Describe the visibility of the inside of the container after closing the lid. What does this suggest
about the effect of air pollutants on visibility in the atmosphere? What are its implications for the
safety of the public, especially in urban spaces?
○ After closing the lid, the inside of the container became harder to see due to the gas from
the burning incense being trapped inside.
○ Air pollution affects how clear and how far people can see since the pollutants are
affecting the visibility in the atmosphere.
○ Air pollutants, fog, and haze can cause several road accidents, respiratory problems, heart
diseases, reduces visibility, and blocks sunlight.
5. What are the possible effects of acid rain on organisms, particularly plant life?

6. What is the source of fuel in the setup for Complete vs. Incomplete Combustion?

7. Why does blowing air through the flame in the last part of the experiment produce a different
result than when no air is blown?

8. What large-scale combustion reactions could contribute significantly to air pollution today?

INSTRUCTOR’S NOTES:
● Sodium bicarbonate, commonly known as baking soda, has the chemical formula NaHCO 3. It
has a molar mass 84.007 g/mol. To convert grams to moles, we simply perform dimensional
analysis using the molar mass. See the example below for sulfur compound:

Note that you will also have to convert mL to L to get the molar concentration: 1L=1000mL
