Chiller Water Buffer Tanks Sizing Report

Objective: 

The need for a buffer tank is to decouple the chiller from the minimum connected load, and to avoid 
running the chiller at extremely low loads in case other circuits are not functioning. 

Method & Inputs: 

The first step is to determine the minimum possible loads at the chiller plant which is considered as the 
part load for the common zones (40%) for the building 58; these minimum loads are defined as 
parameter C. Listed below are the minimum expected loads from each building: 

 Sum of the common zones without the fresh air for the B58 is 31.1 kW, the minimum expected 
load then is 40% of this sum that is 12.4 kW (42,530 BTU/h). 

The second parameter is the minimum chiller run time that is set by default to 10 minutes which leads 
less than 6 starts per hour, this is defined as the parameter A. 

Referring to the data sheets of the proposed chillers, the minimum output from 1 unit defined the 
parameter B that is listed below: 

 96.8 kW (330,940 BTU/h) for the B58 chiller.

Provided that the dT for the chillers at any operating condition is set to 5°C (9°F); below is the minimum 
buffer tanks capacities for each of the buildings: 

 Building 58: 534 US gallons (2,018 Liters) 

Referring to the closest market available standard tanks sizes, one 2,500 Liters tank for the building 58.
