DISCUSSION

1st Saturday FINAL

LEARNING OUTCOME:

- Know the different forms in Arnis

- Apply the different striking points in Arnis

As a fighting art, arnis has three forms of combat:

1. Espada y daga (sword and dagger)- practiced using a wooden

sword and wooden dagger;

Espada y Daga is a system that simulates the use of one Long and
one short weapon as well as shield and weapon combinations and
is unique to Filipino Martial Arts due to its combination of long and
short weapon, which teaches the partitioner to transition from
Long to mid or mid to short ranges and vice versa. This can be
achieved by using footwork that can transcend all three ranges
(largo, Medio, corto).

Espada y Daga comes in different names depending on the Long-short weapon combination like
baston y Daga, baston y dulo, bolo y Daga, etc..

Emphasis on the weaker hand (called as the "live hand") to complement the stronger hand
(called as the "weapon hand") is also one of the focus of Espada y Daga.

Through the stopping, slashing and thrusting movements of the live hand, the practitioner is
being trained to parry, push, pull, punch, hack, and other control techniques.

2
Espada y Daga is a ideal for developing the following:

a. Transitioning from long-range to mid-range

b. Emphasis on complementing the stronger weapon hand with the weaker "live hand"

c. Utilisation of pushing, punching, hacking and other forms of controls in tandem with
the weapon hand

2. Solo baston (single stick)- employing a stick made of wood

or rattan cane; and

Solo Baston also called as solo olisi, simulates a combative

system utilizing one Long weapon such as stick (for blunt
weapon) and swords (for edged weapon) that focuses on the
use of the weapon hand especially in Long range while it goes in
tandem with the live hand (that is usually trained by Espada y
Daga) for medium to close range.

Common single weapon used in Filipino Martial Arts are: (blunt) rattan stick, kamagong stick,
bahi stick; (edged): Parang, Itak, Gulok, Espada, Barong, Ginunting, among others.

Traditionally, practitioners learns Doble Baston first then Solo Baston, however, nowadays , Solo
Baston are initially learned due to its simplicity and focus on the already stronger han

Advantages of using solo Baston are the following:

a. Easier to learn as it focuses on the stronger hand.

b. Frees the live hand to be able to do control techniques such as pushing, pulling,
punching, hacking, etc...

c. A single weapon can be interchanged between 2 hands which is a good strategy and
avoids being lopsided

3. Sinawali -a native term relating to the intricate movements of two baton (sticks) to the
crisscross weave of a sawaii, the bamboo-split pattern used in walling and matting.

4. Anyo (form) is the application of all styles learned throughout one's training, and is
performed with a specific weapon (i.e. cane, dagger, hands) to show the flow of that form.
Anyo requires certain proficiency of beat, tempo, timing, agility, and most of all, diwang
panlaban (fighting spirit).

3
The 12 Striking Techniques in Arnis

1-Left Temple Attack

A diagonal downward forehand swing to the left temple. From the position, the warrior will hold
the stick with one hand at 1 o’clock moving his stick in slashing motion while his free hand on
his chest.

2–Right Temple Attack.

A diagonal downward backhand swing striking to the right temple. Assuming a fighting stance
like the left temple strike, the warrior this time held his stick at 11o'clock with his free hand
kept on his chest.

3–Left Shoulder Attack

The 3rd striking technique allows the practitioner to extend his weapon hand making it easier
for him to strike any part of the opponent between its shoulder and hips. The stick will be draw
in a diagonal forehand slashing swing making it easier to deliver a damage.

4–Right Shoulder Attack

Same as the 3rd strike but this time the practitioner will extend the weapon hand to strike any
part of the body between the shoulder and the hips in a backhand slashing swing located on
the right side

5–Thrust to the stomach.

In this strike, the practitioner will thrust the weapon hand to the stomach and is followed by an
upward motion that will cut through his opponent's body.

6–Left chest stab.

In this strike, the weapon hand is then extended to the front with the palm facing outward and
the elbow kept up where this strike can cause damage to the rib cage.

7–Right chest stab.

In this stance, the practitioner will practice the scooping action. The weapon hand is then
extended forward with the palm facing outward. To deliver the strike properly, the elbow should
be kept up puncturing the opponents right lung.

8–Left Lower Leg.

In this technique, the practitioner will deliver a powerful strike to the opponents lower leg,
mainly the knee, the angle or the ankel which throws off the opponents balance and immobilize
him. By doing this, the warrior is supposed to lower his body(extending the weapon arm).
Holding his palm upward and hit any part of the opponents lower leg.

9–Right Lower Leg

4
Again, like the 8th strike, the main target here is the right lower leg which immobilize the
opponent. By doing this, the palm should face downward.

10–Left Eye Poke

The target here is the left eye socket. In order to execute it properly, the practitioner should
assume fighting stance then extend the weapon hand forward with the palm facing outward
with its elbow kept down.

11– Right Eye Poke

Same as the 10th strike technique. To execute it properly the practitioner will have to hold his
elbow down poking the right eye of the oponent.

12–Strike to the crown/top of head.

The last strike will be a straight downward overhead swing directed towards the crown of the
head which could throw off the opponents mobility and balance.

Techniques in Arnis. Observe the right stances in different striking points. Deadline of your
output will be on or before JANUARY 29, 2022. You can send your output via messenger or
gmail. The output will be graded according to the following criteria’s:

- Content
- Videography interest
- Videography Clarity
- Promptness (ON OR BEFORE JANUARY 29, 2022).

Learning Objectives:
-Demonstrate the proper way of executing the blocking techniques in Arnis.
-Appreciate the benefits derived from using the appropriated blocking techniques in Arnis.

Blocking Techniques

To begin with, there are six techniques which players in arnis can employ to block a blow or strike .It
is said that the capacity of a defender to endure an attackers strike defends much on his ability to
parry or block deadly blows effectively and to counter strike with equal efficacy,

There are Six Basic Blocking Techniques

1. Inward Block: This can be used to deflect strike

no.1 and no.3

Initial position: Open-leg stance, knees bent in

fighting posture, left hand with open palm held up
in front of the body.

With right elbow at right angle and cane pointing

upward, lunge with right forward stance , twisting
body to the right and at the same time , bringing
cane forward braced by the left hand is way to
block to attacker’s blow.

2. Outward Block: This can be used to deflect strike

no.2 and no.4

Initial Position: With right elbow at right angle and

cane pointing upward, lunge with right (or left)

6
simultaneously twisting body to the left and at the same time , bringing cane forward,
braced by the left hand to block to attacker’s blow.

3. Rising Block: This can be used to deflect strike

no.12

Initial Position: In a right(or left) forward stance

with cane in front at hip level, raise cane
horizontally forward and over the head supported
by open palm of the left hand to block attacker’s
blow.

4. Downward-Inward Block: This can be used to

deflect strike no. 9

Initial Position: In a right (or left) forward stance,

bring cane from downward to the right to block
attacker’s blow.

5. Downward-Outward Block: This can be used to

deflect strike no. 8

Initial Position: : In a right (or left) forward stance,

bring cane from downward to the left to block
attacker’s blow.

7
6. Vertical Block: This can be used to deflect strike
no. 5

Initial Position: In right (or left) forward stance,

raise right elbow to shoulder level and twist wrist
outward to the left so that cane is vertical with tip
pointing downward. Always brace the cane with
open palm of left hand at the middle section.
