Cell Membrane Poster Project (30 points)

This project is meant to take you through and remind you of the different types of transport
that help different particles, ions and molecules cross the cell membrane. This project can help
you by not only seeing a visual of the different types of transport, but also helping you review at
the end of the unit. You may work with ONE partner.
Labeling your Membrane (12 points): Your membrane should contain all the following labels.
These labels should be neatly depicted on your membrane and should show the range of
different transport methods that happen across the cell membrane. Make sure to show moving
particles with arrows!
1. Phospholipid 14. Carrier Protein
2. Hydrophobic Tails 15. Glucose (large, non-polar)
3. Hydrophillic Heads 16. Passive Transport
4. Intracellular Space 17. High Positive Charge
5. Extracellular Space 18. Low Positive Charge
6. Integral Protein 19. Sodium-Potassium Pump
7. Peripheral Protein 20. Sodium Ion (Na+)
8. Cholesterol 21. Potassium Ion (K+)
9. Diffusion 22. Endocytosis or Exocytosis (only
10. Osmosis eligible if all other labels are shown)
11. High Concentration a. Vesicle
12. Low Concentration b. If endocytosis, label the type
13. Channel Protein

Explaining your membrane (24 points): These questions help to further explain the different
processes happening on your depiction of the cell membrane. Please answer ALL these
questions ON THE BACK of your membrane poster. This is not only a good way to explain what’s
happening on your membrane, but also a way to review all the types of transport we have
learned about.
1. Why do we refer to the cell membrane as “semi-permeable”?

2. How do you know the phospholipid tails are water fearing and the heads are water
loving?

3. What is the difference between integral proteins and peripheral proteins?

4. Why does the membrane contain cholesterol?

5. How does diffusion work and why doesn’t it require energy?

6. What is osmosis?

7. Why does the membrane have transport proteins to help facilitated diffusion?

8. What is the difference between channel and carrier proteins?

9. How do Sodium-Potassium Pumps work differently than carrier proteins?

10. What determines the shape of a pump protein?

11. How are vesicles involved in endocytosis and exocytosis?

12. Describe the different types of endocytosis and what makes them different.

Making your membrane neat (4 points): These are just a couple reminders to help you keep your
membrane easy to refer to and easy to review the different processes.
Follow all these guidelines to receive full credit for neatness:

 All labels and explanation should be legible.

 Your membrane should contain color of some sort.
 Your types of transport should be spaced out and organized into categories.
 Any movement (of particles or ions) should be shown with arrows.
 Questions will be checked for accuracy.
