NASSCOM / MEM-48 / 2004-05 23 July 2004

Dear member, Sub: Seeking views on definition of IT/ITeS Besides closely working with the Central Government and its various Ministries, NASSCOM has been actively engaged with different State governments to resolve members issues and to promote IT/ITeS. In this regard, State Government of Haryana has contacted NASSCOM for guidance on revisiting the existing IT/ITeS definition as per the IT policy of Haryana Government, so that various incentives given to IT/ITeS industry are not misused. As the special incentives announced by State for IT/ITeS are prerogative of only those companies which are covered in the definition/scope of IT industry mentioned in the State's IT policy, Government has sought NASSCOMs advice on revisiting definition of IT/ITeS industry. An entrepreneur has recently approached the State Government to provide incentives for setting up a unit in Haryana that would provide Value Added Internet Bandwidth & Connectivity Services and Server/Data Storage Area Networking solutions. It has been observed by the State Government that these are not covered as per laid down IT definition of Haryana Government although it is closely connected to the IT/ITeS industry. We seek suggestions from the IT industry on reconsidering the States definition of IT industry and encourage IT entrepreneurs to highlight the required amendments that they wish to seek in the existing definition of IT/ITeS. We are enclosing the definition/scope of IT industry as mentioned in the State IT policy of Haryana for your reference. We request you to send us your valuable feedback to Ms Arunima Sharma at email: [email protected] or [email protected] latest by 26 July 2004. With regards, Yours sincerely

Kiran Karnik President
