Oral Communications in nursing

Oral communication is vital in nursing practice. Oral communication helps the nurses and

patients to communicate their thoughts, share information, and present ideas. Taking oral

communications introduced me to a new level of interaction between the patients and nurses and

nurses and nurses. I learned that effective oral communication is vital in promoting the

implementation of prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation interventions. Effective oral

communication is key in establishing a therapeutic practice. The therapeutic practice encourages

the patients to convey their concerns thereby enabling the nurses to make informed healthcare

decisions. Therefore, oral communications gave me a rare opportunity to learn how to develop

therapeutic practice depending on the context and the patient.

I learned oral communications using tools such as rhetoric, storytelling, speech, and

recitations. For instance, students had specific topics to research and present in front of the class.

The oral presentations enhanced my speech skills. Moreover, the classes had small groups where

the students told stories about their experiences in the nursing school. Storytelling helped to

improve my competence in oral communications and enhanced my learning experience.

The oral communication skills I earned during the semester would prove vital in my

future nursing career. Communication facilitates the interaction between the nurses and between

the nursing staff and the patients. As a result, I would use my oral communication skills to

improve my interactions with the nursing staff and the patients. Improved communication would

ensure effective transfer of information leading to improved patient outcomes. However, the

improved patient outcomes would depend on how well you adapt the learned skills into practice.

In my case, I will try to make storytelling a crucial part of my therapeutic practice. Storytelling

enables healthcare professionals to see through the eyes of the patients and make logical and

appropriate care decisions. Therefore, I will encourage my patients to tell stories about their

health conditions and the interventions they have tried to use before with little or no success. The

stories would give a comprehensive overview of the patient's condition thereby providing a solid

basis for diagnosis and treatment.

As a nursing practitioner, my primary goal is to improve patient outcomes. Doing so

requires establishing a good relationship with the patients to understand their concerns, fears, and

what they want for their health. Oral communications fit perfectly into these goals. As

aforementioned, oral communication helps to develop a therapeutic relationship between the

nurses and patients. A therapeutic relationship forms a foundation for improving patient

outcomes. As a result, the oral communications skills I gained from the teaching would be vital

in enabling the accomplishment of my goals.

Moreover, the knowledge I gained from the experience would influence how I approach

and compose oral presentations in the future. Oral presentations need to be specific and detailed

depending on the audience and the topic. These skills would guide my future research and

composition of oral presentations.

I also endured a few hardships during the semester even though the learning experience

was smooth for the large parts of the study period. The challenges interfered with my learning

progress. Some of the hardships that I encountered included dealing with depression and noise

issues in our apartment. Our apartment primarily housed undergraduate students that liked to

party a lot. The rowdy students made it difficult for individuals to study and focus on other study

activities. On top of that, I struggled with anxiety attacks, which increased my depression levels

making it hard for me to concentrate on my studies.
