What are these?

Protists
(These ones are diatoms specifically)
What are protists?
Protists are not bacteria
Protists are not viruses
Protists are not animal cells
Protists are not plant cells
Protists are not fungus
So what are they?

Anything that is none of the above.

Protists are eukaryotic cells (they have a

nucleus and organelles)

Protists can be single celled or multicellular

Protists all look very different from each

other.

Protists are eukaryotes that are

not animals, plants or fungi.
Classification according
to characteristics

Animal-like Plant-like Fungus-like

Animal-Like Protists: Protozoa

Like animals
Not a plant

The most obvious characteristic

of animals is movement.

Protists that move are called

Protozoa (animal-like)
Animal-Like Protists: Protozoa
Protozoa are further classified by HOW they move:

Amoeba Ciliates Flagellates Sporozoa

Adult form
Shape-change Swimming hair Swimming tail
stops moving
Amoeba

Amoeba capturing Amoeba moving Amoeba gathering

a ciliate around food

Flagellates
Example: Giardia

2 Nuclei 3 Pairs of Flagella

Plant-Like Protists (Algae)

Not a fungus

The most obvious characteristic

of plants is Photosynthesis

Protists that are autotrophs are

called ALGAE.
Algae types

Make a table about the different algae

types.
For each, include:
● A picture
● Unicellular or multicellular
● 3 facts (as bullet points)

Fungus-like Protists

Characteristics
● Heterotroph
● Cell walls
● Reproduction by spores
Slime molds: very weird protists
Amoeba phase Fusion into a mega Fruiting and spore
(single celled) organism release
Slime mold “intelligence”

● Slime molds can react to

stimuli as one organism.
● They display “swarm
intelligence” like ants,
exchanging information
and even forming
“memories”.
Slime molds

In this experiment, slime

mold is recreating the
Tokyo transport network by
finding the most efficient
connecting between food
sources.
Water molds and downy mildews

Like water and moist places

Often grow like fuzzy hair.

Food and crops are moist.

During the Irish potato famine,

20% of the population starved.
