INTRODUCTION: THE POETRY OF SAMUEL WAGAN WATSON

What is meant by READING PRACTICES?

READING PRACTICES refers to the various FRAMEWORKS we employ as readers to inform our INTERPRETATION of a text.

It is the practice of taking CONTEXT, GENRE and LITERARY THEORY into consideration when approaching and attempting to MAKE
MEANING of a text.

GENRE takes into consideration the FORM that the text takes, such as POETRY, DRAMA or PROSE and the GENERIC CONVENTIONS that
shape the text as it pertains to the genre in question, as well as the various sub-genre classifications that give meaning to the text, such as modern
tragedy or gothic.

CONTEXT refers to the social, political, cultural, and personal influences on both the writer and the reader respectively, that help to inform the
themes, ideas and values of the text, and its subsequent interpretation. Additionally, we take into consideration the context of production, which
pertains to the context (time and place) wherein which the text itself was produced.

LITERARY THEORY refers to the critical lens or perspective from which we may approach a text, in order to derive meaning and shape our
understanding of a text. For example, we may approach a text from a feminist, Marxist, psychoanalytical or
post-colonial perspective.

(Please see the resource, Critical Theory Today for more information on the function of literary theory, detailed explanations of each theoretical
perspective, and examples of critical analysis of texts through the lens of literary theory).
