CHAPTER 1
Introduction
LGBT, an abbreviation for Lesbian, Gay, bisexual, and Transgender is known as a minor sexual
orientation group LGBT can also be used as an umbrella term for referring to a certain gender and sexual
identity topics. At first, this minor group was called homosexual in the 1960s. However, it was replaced
with the term 'gay' because homosexuality only belongs to certain group and is not accurate to
represent all of the queer gender and sexual identity. In the past, LGBT already existed, but people were
very strict to LGBT.
There have been many issues and cases about the acceptance of LGBT issues in society. Such as
hate speech, discrimination, and negative attitudes towards LGBT individuals. The negative treatment
makes the minor individuals hard to express themselves in society and causes them to experience
mental health problems and difficulties in accepting themselves as they are. In the 1920s, The society for
Human Rights was formed by Henry Gerber in Chicago as the first formal organization in the united
states the support gay rights ( Elliot 2015). The Human Rights Campaign (HRC) was created in 1980 by
activist Steve Endean as a political organization to support and promote equality of LGBT individuals and
other LGBT communities.
There have bee many issues and cases about the acceptance of LGBT issues in society, such as
hate speech, discrimination, and negative attitudes towards LGBT individuals. The Human Right Campaign
(HRC) was created in 1980 by activist Steve Endean as a political organization to support and promote
equality of LGBT individuals and other LGBT communities. The philosophy of gay pride assumes that
sexuality not only is but also should be the primary source of identification, community, and self-esteem
(Conrell 2015,24).
Statement of the Problem
This study addresses the over all research statement; The Effect of Discrimination among LGBT
Members to the Mental Health.
1.What are the physical and emotional discrimination that LGBT Members always experience?
2.What are the effect of discrimination to the Mental Health of LGBT Members?
Hypothesis
Keeping in view the objectives of the research and the available research literature, two specific
hypothesis are being offered, the first Hypothesis there is significance relationship between
discrimination and Mental Health among LGBT Members. The next hypothesis is that physical
discrimination greatly affect the mental health of LGBT Members.
This study investigates The Effect of Discrimination among LGBT Members to their Mental
Health.
Schools- Schools can support LGBT youth by encouraging respect for all students and developing and
implementing non-discrimination Ang Anti-Bullying.
SchoolAdministration-The findings of this study will help the school Administrator especially the
principal to implement programs and protect as an intervention to eradicate discrimination among LGBT
Members in school.
Parents - The parents should care, loved, and feel supported and provide safety supervision and control.
Student -The student should start an LGBT organization at the school and post safe space signs.
Future Researcher - The study may give inspiration and additional knowledge to future researchers. It
serve as their basis in gathering data and utilizes it to create new research.
The respondents of this study are the upland Barangay's of Mobo, Masbate and we have to
LGBT.Comprised of 50 bisexual respondents and 10 gay and 10 lesbian of respondents. The barangay
Lomocloc is 11 respondent at the ranges of 15 to 23 and The barangay Sta.Maria is 17 respondents at
the ranges of 12 to 22 and The barangay Mapuyo is 17 respondents at the ranges of 13 to 19 and The
barangay Barag is 10 respondents at the ranges of 14 to 19.
Due to limited time. The research will only be able to generalized on LGBT who choose to
participate in the study, and cannot create nor assume strong corelations and causitions that can apply
to the rest of the province of Masbate. The researchers also recognizes that the survey will not be able to
access LGBT, from all corner's of the Philippines, especially those do not have immediate access to
internet facilities, as well as those are not adept to political and academic jargon regarding LGBT
students and policy. This paper will identify the processes and experiences of discrimination as defined
by the Philippine LGBT literature included in this research.

This chapter focuses on the review of relevant literature on the effects of discrimination to the
mental health among LGBT Members. The chapter also discusses statistics available on discrimination to
the Mental Health among LGBT Members.
Foreign Literature
William and Mohammad(2009) extended the finding in a view of study published between 2005
and 2007 of the 47 article reviewed nearly three quarters demonstrated a positive association between
racial ethic discrimination and poor mental health discrimination based on a minority sexual orientation
or identify is similarity associated with poor mental health outcomes research has focused on
psychological consequences of discrimination in the form of extreme event 's such as have crimes and
other victimization (Herek et,at 1999) and on daily hassle in the form of heterosexist events ( swim et al
2009). Both ends of this spectrum appear to negatively affect mental health among lesbian, gay, bisexual
groups resulting and post- traumatic stress symptoms ( Herek et al 1999) or increased and anger ( swim
et al 2009).
In their 2009 mays and Cochram used data from the national day middle development of the
United States (MIDUS) to test relationship between experiences of discrimination and Mental Health
indicators among sexual minority adults. When the auths accounted for discriminatory experiences, the
relationship between sexual identity and mental health outcomes deminished suggesting that mental
health disparities across sexual orientation groups can explained. In part by experiences discrimination
on Mental Health.
Racism sexism and homophobia are all manifestation and enactments of discrimination that have a
number of deleterious effects. Numerous studies have established a relationship between experiences
of discrimination and negative outcomes, particularly mental health outcomes. Such as mood and
anxiety disorders ( e.g Kessler, Mickelson & Williams 1999: Williams and Mohammad 2009, Yip, Gee &
Takeuchi 2008). For example in a review of 138 studies of self- reported racism and health paradise
(2006) noted that the most relationship was between and poor mental health outcomes.
Klonoff and Colleagues (2000), found that although women exhibited higher mental health
symptomology than Men, when exist event's were encounted for, gender differences largely
disappeared. The autors concluded that sexism plays a role in women's mental health and likely helps to
explain mental health disparities between women and men.
Discrimination based on minority sexual orientation or identity is similarly associated with poor
mental health outcomes (Herek et al).
Local Literature
Schools should be safe places for everyone. But in the Philippines, students who are lesbian, gay,
bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) too often find that their schooling experience is marred by bullying,
discrimination, lack of access of to LGBT, related information, and in some cases , physical or sexual
assault. These abuses can cause deep and lasting harm and artail students, right to education, protected
under Philippines and International law.( Many Pacquiao).
While Verbal bullying appeared to be the most prevalent problem that LGBT students faced,
physical bullying and sexualized harassment were also wrongly common and while students were most
often the culprits, teachers ignored or participated in bullying as well ( Carlos M.).
A new Human Rights Watch report, " Just Let Us Be" , examines how many LGBT students in the
Philippines are excluded or marginalized in schools, where they are often bullied, discriminated against,
and in some cases, physically or sexually assaulted. Many lawmaker's and school administrators have
recognized that bullying of LGBT youth is a serious problem and have designed policies to address the
problem. But their policies, such as outlined under the national Anti-Bullying Law, have not been
adequately enforced. (Patrick)
He has come a long way . Patrick said he knew, even as a young boy in elementary school, that he
was " different". For years, he was bullied in school for being feminine by students and at times even by
teachers.
Chapter 3
Methodology
Introduction
This chapter describes how the study was undertaken. It discuss main topic The Effect of
Discrimination to the Mental Health among LGBT Members in upland barangay. Covered in this chapter
are the research method use, research design, The number of participants, the instrument used, the
procedure in gathering data, and the analysis of the data gathered.
Frequency counts refer to the number of items the answer is given by the respondents.
Percentage was taken by dividing the frequency of an answer by the total number of respondents.
Percentage. Where in
Percentage was used to determine the distribution of the respondents in (1) kind of discrimination
did the LGBT Members always experienced, (2) People who usually discriminates the LGBT Members
emotionally, (3) People also usually discriminates the LGBT Members they physically, (4) LGBT Members
usually experience discrimination in school, (5) The effects of discrimination to the Mental Health of
LGBT Members,(6) LGBT did survive from physical and emotional discrimination.
Ranking is the process as method of determining the scores according to some bases such
importance, quality or chronology. This was used to indicate/ rank the (1) kind of discrimination did the
LGBT Members always experienced,(2) people who usually discriminates the LGBT Members
emotionally, (3) People also usually discriminates the LGBT Members they physically, (4) LGBT Members
usually discrimination in school, (5) The effect of discrimination to the Mental Health of LGBT Members,
(6) LGBT did survive from physical and emotional discrimination.
Research Design
The study utilizes the description methods of research because it described the present conditions
of the present phenomena of the study. The questionnaire gathered to described the variable of the
study, establish interventions and comply with the assumption of the study.
Best as cited by Estolas (1887) that descriptive research describes and interprets. It is concerned
with the condition of the relationship that exists, practices that prevail, beliefs and procedures that are
going on, effects that are being felt or trend that are developing.
This method was used because it is the most suited to then study for it reveals that facts relative to
the existing study.
Source of Data
This study was confined to the data gathered from the questioner - checklists that was given to the
LGBT Members living in of Mobo Masbate namely in Barangay Sta Maria, Mabuhay, Barag, Mapuyo,
Lomocloc. The total number of respondents of this study were seventy (70) respondents comprised of
(50) bisexuals, 10 gays and 10 lesbian.
Description of Instruments/ Data Gathering Form
The researcher used a questionnaire - checklist as their means of collecting data, because it is
simple wherein items are easily constructed. Questionnaire - Checklist can be easily distributed and less
time in consumed during data gathering. Answers, are keeping confidental and data form closed ended
items are easy to tabulate. The terms are comprehensive and in direct manner to avoid confusion. The
respondents were asked to answer the said questionnaire by checking the blank of which would
correspond to their most appropriate answer/s. The questionnaire is composed of 70 items.
The first part of the questionnaire is about the kind of discrimination did the LGBT Members always
experienced. The second part is about the people who usually discriminates the LGBT Members
emotionally. The third part is about the people also usually discriminates the LGBT Members they
physically. The fourth part is about the LGBT Members usually experience discrimination in school. The
fifth part is about The effects of discrimination to the Mental Health of LGBT Members. The sixth part is
about LGBT did survive from physical and emotional discrimination.

develops depression among LGBT members.
Recommendation
Additional data are required to determine if LGBT may be at higher risk for certain health
problems. Further research is needed to determine the absolute and relative magnitudes of such risk
and to better understand that risk and protective factors that influence LGBT health. There are
significant barriers to conducting research on LGBT health, including lack of findings which have limited
the development of more sophisticated studies, data analysis, and the publication of results, Research
on LGBT members, especially the development of more sophisticated methodologies to conduct such
research, will help advance scientific knowledge that is also of benefit to other population subgroups
including rare or hard-to- identify population subgroups and women in general.
