DUMAGAT
They are found in the hillsides and mountains of Quezon, Bulacan, Rizal and Laguna provinces.
The term "Dumagat" is thought to be derived from the word "rumakat", "lumakat" or "lumakad"
which signifies the migration of early Negritos in Philippines by walking in land and not by the
sea.
According to elders who were alive and witnessed during the 1950s in Balara (now Quezon
City), the word that refers to people who speak Tagalog is "Tageloy"! and the definition of this
word is "Tagalog". Their language or word has antiquity and its pronunciation and spelling is
not fixed but variable based on the origin of the word. They are in the 4th region in Luson in the
provinces of Rizal, Laguna, Bulacan and part of Quezon.
Ang ibang pangkat katutubo ay may ibang bansag ay bahagyang naiiba sa mga dumagat. Sa
kasalukuyan, ang dumagat ay nahahati sa dalawang pangkat, isa ang remontado o mestiso at ang
isa ay ang puro o Agta. Ang tunay na Agtang Dumagat ay nasa kabundukan ng Sierra Madre at
ang remontado ay nakatira sa mga mataong bayan sa Rizal at Quezon tulad ng General Nakar,
Quezon at Infanta, Quezon.
Economically, they are very poor. In many cases, Dumagats are abused, oppressed and are
always on the losing end. Dumagat are characteristically short, dark-skinned, kinky-haired, thick
lipped, and small-nosed.
Their traditional clothing is tapis (skirt) for women and bahag (breech cloth) for men.
Breastfeeding mothers wear uban, a piece of fabric slung from the shoulders. Most men scar
their bodies, using various designs that have passed down them by their ancestors. Traditional
Dumagat house are built in cluster and made from indigenous materials such as bamboo, wood,
talahib (cogon), coconut leaves, and abaca bark.
When it comes to marriage Dumagat is just having a little banquet and preaching to their child.
There is no ceremony in Dumagat marriage the parent of the bride and groom talk only and their
child instantly become married.
The Dumagat worship the spirits of their ancestor or Anitos; their rituals include dances and a
depiction of hunting movements. They have no formal leaders. The males in their community
only serves as consultants for attribution purpose. Today the present time Dumagat adapt the
generation and become “civilized”. They abandon their tribal attire and wear clothes like the
other people o they will never be different among the others. Some of their beliefs is also
abandon like their worship to the Anitos will never be seen to them. They do seasonal job for
now such as corpa and charcoal making.
